Re: Nursing school

Just thought I'd revive the thread. How's everybody doing? Any new students? Hubby started his 2nd semester about a month ago and some days I'd like to crawl under a rock. No matter how much anyone prepares themselves I just don't think anyone can anticipate what it's going to be like. Most of the time it's manageable but everything is so overwhelming. I worked 3 jobs since August until last week. Hubby wasn't cut out to handle the Mr. Mom routine and things were starting to fall apart. He studies constantly holed up in our office so even when he's home we don't see him. At least I can work on the house more since I'm not working as much but I'm still gone almost every night and every weekend so I don't get to see the kiddos very much. Hubby's classes are 10X as hard as his prereqs so basically if he passes a test he's doing well which leaves him no margin for error. Hate to sound like such a downer but I'm having a bad week. I know the end result will benefit everyone but it's impossible to look forward to the end result when you have to take things one day at a time.(not my strongpoint) Guess I just need some words of encouragement. Any inspirational stories anyone?

If his program is anything like mine, hopefully it won't get any "tougher," so to speak. I just started my 3rd semester and the pace is still the same, the amount of info we need to cram is the same. The assignment load is the same. Your husband is lucky he has you to cover for him while he's in school ::yes:: . I have a great husband who has taken over most of the kid responsibilities. I still won't let him do the laundry. If he started cooking I think I could handle that :). My husband lost his job 9 wks ago (automotive engineer), so I am even more determined to get through this and be able to help provide for our family. Make sure that your husband does get a little downtime if possible. I have tried to get my husband to help me study, but sometimes only another nursing student can help in that area. Make sure that both of you still get time together, somehow! Time flies during nursing school, thank goodness!

Hi there! I am also an ASN student, this is my second semester just had a Pharmacology test today. Now my brain is fried. My advice to anyone interested is to plan for it to be all consuming and take up all of your time. I cant imagine how anyone can do this and take care of children or try to work full time. My house looks like a disaster, Im working a ton over the summer so i can work less during the semester, but it will all be worth it in the end! But a messy house I can deal with for two years. :thumbsup2

These classes are no joke, you have to put in a lot of time! It is extremely stressful! Get all those prereqs DONE before you start the nursing classes! I am wondering if a 4 year program is a little more spread out. I think we are packing in a LOT for two years, I hope I get all the information I will need!

Alex and Evans mom HANG IN THERE! It will all be worth it in the end, its just 2 years! Do what you can to sqeeze in some relaxing movie time, but be prepared for the amount of strss he is under! Two years from now you will be glad its over. :) :cheer2:

I finally finished my pre-reqs and got on the waitlist. I am taking the co-reqs while I wait. I was told I probably won't get in until Jan. 2010

Good luck! :goodvibes Taking your co-reqs while you wait is an excellent idea. Hubby took all of his except for his Eng101 which he is taking now. He really wishes he could've fit it in somewhere prior.

Thanks for the encouragement. :flower3: Hubby wonders if it will ever stop getting more intense. He started working 2 days a week about a month ago and I told him if it gets to be too much to tell me. Between his 3 classes and clinicals he's swamped! We do try to go out once a month just the two of us and we both have every other Sunday off so we can spend time as a family. Funny that you mention laundry. Hubby has been doing ours(sorta) and this morning I opened up the dryer to find mulit-color clothes! One of my boys had left 2 crayons in their pocket so everything is orange and black including the dryer! Oh well, guess we're ready for Halloween...:rotfl: Good luck with your classes!:goodvibes

Hubby had pharmacology last semester and it was a doozie! Good luck with your classes. :goodvibes Luckily hubby did all of his co-reqs(except for eng101) before he started nursing school. I can't imagine him doing all his nursing classes and co-reqs at the same time. I'm trying to hang in there. Thanks for the encouragement.:flower3:

Hi Everyone. :wave2:

I am in the process of finishing my prerequisites for Nursing. And I just submitted my application on Saturday, but I won't hear back until June! :scared:

It makes me incredibly nervous, but I believe I'm going to apply to a couple places around the city. This school is my number one choice though. So I'm trying to think positively!

Can I just add that I LOATHE Chemistry?! It is like a complete foreign language to me.

Hi! Good luck with your school of choice. Doing the prereqs first is the way to go. Oh my, chemistry! Hubby didn't have to have that. He had A&P I and II and Microbiology as his sciences. He is not that fond of chemistry. Will you start this fall if accepted? Don't let my post bum you out. It is demanding and trying at times but so worth it. Keep us posted!

This thread warms my heart....don't ever give up...if you want to be a nurse, you will make it. I am 58. I dropped out of Johns Hopkins after my first year...I was 19 at the time and so so homesick. I regretted it every day. When I was 25 and my first child was starting kindergarten, I went back to our local community college and became an RN...I as 27. When I was 50 I graduated from Penn State with my BSN. 3 years ago I went to wound, ostomy, continence school and I am now a certified WOCN. I love what I do. I have my own clinic and I treat patients with chronic wounds and ostomy problems. We are so in need of new nurses. Young people don't want to work 3 shifts, weekends, holidays...I can't say it was a fun thing to do, but I always felt like a valued professional during my nursing career. I felt like I made a difference in someone's life.

So, don't give up. Just keep on applying and waiting your turn. Study study study...you need to learn as much as you can to pass your boards. And then you will be fulfilling your dream and making your mark in this world.

With many blessings to all,
Susan

Susan, thank you for being so encouraging! Just applying to nursing school, and starting the pre-reqs has been a bit daunting. But it's so nice to hear success stories. I also had trouble with homesickness with my first few years of college and had to take time off. I'm back again, but it's definitely hard!

Thank you! I will start this fall if I'm accepted.

I'm jealous of your husband. I wish I didn't have to take it. :p

Nursing is a secure job that is flexible. Nursing school is hard, but they make it like that so they can weed people out. Nursing is a very tough field and many days I go home and wonder why am I doing this? But there are also days that I know that I made a difference in someone's life and the person noticed and was grateful, which is a nice feeling.
