After 6 preivious DCLs, much soul searching and sticker shock, my group put down a deposit on the Mariner yesterday for a January, 2005 sailing. I have been a DCL loyalists since the Inaugural year, but the extreme difference in pricing has caused me to look elsewhere. We are a group of 7 with two children aged 7 and 13. We saved $1200.00 on an inside cabin for the quad and reserved a balcony for the triple at a savings over $300 for a cat 10. The intinerary is different which holds an appeal - 1 day Labadee/Ocho Rios/Cozumel/Yucatan.
My question - if anyone has sailed - how are the kids' programs/food/entertainment? Is this a line that nickles and dimes for every little thing?
I am holding onto my 9/05 DCL ressie, but it was time to look elsewhere.

Thanks,
Dawn Hope

Im looking into the Mariner as an alternative to DCL too. Between the pricing and the customer service Ive gotten recently I feel its time to look elsewhere.
The Mariner looks like a great ship and Ive heard mostly wonderful reviews on it (check out cruise critic if you havent already).
Unfortunately I dont have much specific info for you but Ill be interested in replies here too. Good luck deciding, I know its tough. :D

We have been on DCL three times and the Voyager-class ships three times (Mariner, Explorer, Navigator) and will be on the Voyager next week.

Both RCCL and DCL are great, and we enjoyed both. We feel there are many more adult activities on RCCL, food (very subjective) is comparable, but more "available" on RCCL (24 hr Cafe Promenade... like we need more availability of food!!!!!)

I have a comaprison of both lines on my web site.. drop me an e-mail and I can send you the link...

you could explore cruisecritic.com. the boards are very active with RCI information and has plenty of info about the Mariner and all it has to offer.

We also booked a 1/15/06 cruise on the Mariner. We are sailing on the Disney Magic this Jan; however, I am tired of the same old same old on the Magic. Do not get me wrong, we love the Magic but wanted to try something else. The price was about $600.00 less than the Magic which is not that much savings. If you have 2 kids and all stay in the same stateroom the savings is greater because the 3rd and 4th person in the same stateroom is 1/2 off regardless of age. We even half-way talked my mom into going with us this time. The 3rd person adult on the Magic is much more. I talked to the RCL reservation center and was told that the ice-skating, rock climbing, mini-golf is at no additional cost. There are stocked mini-fridges in the staterooms and you can have them cleared out to put you own beverages in. I will not know if this is true until we sail the Mariner. My daughter loves the kids club on the Magic but for the premium they charge I think there should be less movie watching and coloring time. The activities on the Marnier for the 6-8 years old look like more fun than the Magic's 5-7.

You can get info on other cruise lines and ships at cruisecritic.com

We're booked on the Mariner for 10/9/05 and I'm really looking forward to it! We got a great price on our cabin, $3,400 for all six of us! I'm been on RCI in the past (before kids) so I'm hoping it is still a great line and that the kids will enjoy it too!

We sailed Mariner in March, 2004 (Western) and then the Magic in September, 2004 (sort of the Eastern!) Even after four DCL cruises, we still prefer DCL and booked two more cruises while onboard. With the savings you got, however, I don't blame you for trying a new ship! As long as you head out with the right attitude (don't expect TOO much...that was my mistake...I REALLY looked forward to trying the Mariner and I think I expected too much), I'm sure you'll enjoy a wonderful cruise!

IMHO, the Mariner is a beautiful ship. Area's superior to the Magic are the fitness center (it is HUGE!) and the outdoor sports court area. Also, there are two specialty restaurants (Portofino and Chops), which both offer wonderful service and delicious meals (the surcharge is $20pp...children 13 and older can join you.) We also enjoyed Johnny Rockets, although there is a surcharge for that, too. The ice show is not to be missed...make sure you get your tickets at the assigned area and time. And we enjoyed skating during our days at sea. There is a good sized casino, if you enjoy gambling and the Promenade shops are nice.

Again, IMHO, there are definately aspects of cruising that DCL does better. The evening entertainment (other than the ice show) onboard Mariner is not very good. Our local high school puts on much better productions. Also, be prepared to feel nickel and dimed. EVERYTHING has a charge. Also, they are VERY stingy with pool towels. Everyone gets one per day and the only way to exchange it is with your room host (no big deal, just an annoyance.) The staterooms are nice and well done, however they are TINY. We had connecting Atrium staterooms for our party of five and we were PACKED in. The bathroom shower's glass door, however, is a nice touch. The biggest difference, however, and the biggest surprise for me, are the evening meals. The dining room food and service is simply not very good. We are not gourmet types, but the food was really sub-par (our daughter was served bloody chicken two nights!) as compared to DCL. Think Perkins and that is the type and quality of the food. And desserts...very small servings and just not very tasty or imaginative. We ate at the specialty restaurants three nights (YUMMY) to avoid the dining room (which at $20 each starts to add up!) Also, fellow passengers tend to be either OLD (and a bit cranky if you have children or teens along!) or young party-types. We are a family with a teen and a toddler and we brought my mom along and we just sort of stuck out on Mariner (again, with RCCL advertising, I thought we'd blend right in...just another surprise for me.)

To be clear, I am NOT trying to dissuade you from trying Mariner. Your post asks for responses and I just wanted to give you my honest scoop. Overall, we had a nice, smooth cruise on Mariner. Captain Thor does a great job keeping you informed and keeping the ship in good shape, the ports are nice and the crew is friendly. If you go informed (check out cruise critic) and with a positive attitude (and TRY not to compare it to DCL), you'll have a great trip. Hey, you'll be cruising the Caribbean. :sunny: How much better can life get?:smooth:

I too have taken the plunge, DH and I are sailing with RCCL in May after 5 DCL cruises. We are sailing out of Baltimore, no airfare on Grandeur of the seas, a rate too good to pass up. We will check out the Kids clubs as we always take our GK's along on DCL. Do have a 4 day booked for 8/2005 and a 7 day booked for 8/2006, but depending what I like, or don't like, on RCCL will determine if I keep those reservations or not.

We sailed on the Explorer two years ago and the Magic last month. I, by far, enjoyed RCCL more. I thought the food was much better on the Explorer. We really enjoyed Johnny Rockets- and when we sailed the only surcharge was for soda and milkshakes in Johnny Rockets, the food was free. We also didn't feel nickel and dimed. I paid more on board DCL than RCCL. The kids programs weren't as intensive as DCL, but were adequate. I thought that other activities were much more enjoyable on RCCL- like swimming in the pool, ice skating and rock climbing. On DCL we couldn't even get into the pool on sea days because there were so many people. I enjoyed not having so many kids running around on RCCL also. The staterooms are a big plus on DCL, though.

That's just my opinion.

We sailed the Mariner for the first time this past June. We loved it and had a great time! Our boys are older now and needing more to do...same for us adults. We are now fans of RCCL and our next cruise will definitely be with them. This cruise saved us about 2000.00 for family of 5 ..compared to DCL. While I have always enjoyed our DCL cruises....we have found that there is life after Disney. Maybe I'll come back someday when we're retired w/ grandkids.... If I can afford it!! LOL!

I too wrote a brief comparison a few mos back but can't find at the moment.

We are heading out on the Mariner in 3 weeks. Will let you know as soon as we get back! :wave2:

I'm joining the club looking for other lines besides DCL. Just returned from our cruise with major disappointments in customer service and other things.

Two questions re RCCL --

Did I misunderstand that you have to pay for every meal? Are there none included?

And do they have staterooms that actually sleep six?

Thanks for any info!

Kris

Thanks for the info. Between what I have read here and on Cruisecritic I feel better. I am glad, though that we will not be in port with the Magic - that could be tough.

Regarding nickel and diming on RCCL, I can't say we felt that way. You can choose to not purchase all of the photos they take, you don't have to play bingo or lots of bingo, you don't have to purchase alcohol, etc. My 25 year old son's bill at the end of a 5 day Voyager cruise was 400.00; he met lots of people and treated them to drinks etc. :-) and had the time of his life. On the other hand, my bill, which included my 10 year old son, myself, and my husband was less than 200.00. We did purchase a few pictures, had a few drinks, and played some bingo, but I don't feel 200.00 was much at all.

zeke11 - no, you don't have to pay for any food at all. You can choose to dine at Portofino's if you want a more elegant dining experience, at 20.00 per person, but you don't have to. We ate in the main dining room and in the Windjammer and enjoyed the food and the ambiance of both.

Hubby and I are sailing on the Mariner April 10th 2005!!

We sail on the Mariner in 9 days. I am really looking forward to it. We have sailed Disney 5 times and have absolutely loved each and every cruise but looking for a change.

I will write a trip report after the cruise and do some comparisons between the cruiselines.

I had reserved a cabin on the March 11th, 2006 DCL Western but I can get an RCCL Western, with the larger verandah cabin for $1900 Canadian cheaper than DCL.
I love DCL and we are doing the 14 day repo next year, but they are getting greedy imho.
Their prices are constantly going up, and we are considering the RCCL cruise. I have cancelled the DCL 2006 ressie, and will wait for now.

Cheers,
Grumbo

I have sailed DCL twice, but have been on several RCCL cruises since. The ships I have been on are very clean.

My son, who just turned 12 actually likes the kids programs better on RCCL, because there aren't so many kids, and they do have a lot of fun things lined up for the kids. I thought the program was nice.

As far as price, I booked an owner's suite for the week of Memorial Day for a five day cruise on RCCL Empress of the Seas. For two adults and third and fourth passenger I paid $3200, which is much less than what I could get on DCL.

Is soda free on RCCL or do you pay for it? Is it free in the dining rooms? Heard there was a charge for food at Johnny Rockets???
Do they charge for beverages other than alcholic or smoothies at meals?

What about room service charges?

What are hours of kids clubs?

Will appreciate hearing back from some of you who are sailing soon on RCCL.
