Raw Vegetables or Fruit That Makes You Sick

I like peppers (yellow, red bell peppers)--but they really upset my tummy. So I have stopped eating them.

Also, raw zucchini seems to be an issue. But it might have been that I was eating too much at one time. (I tend to consume a whole vegetable in one seating sometimes--like a whole cucumber or formerly a whole zucchini as it makes for a nice snack.)

And I will never eat eggplant again. It did something to my tongue when it was cooked. I Swear it was like bees stinging it. I had to drench it in ketchup so none would get on my tongue. After being forced to eat it fried 2-3 x per week for all of 3rd grade. I will never eat it again.

Aren't eggplants and peppers both nightshade? You're probably allergic or sensitive or whatever to nightshade.

When I was pregnant with dd, I developed a problem with eating raw, green bell peppers. They give me terrible heartburn and they're the only food that triggers heartburn for me. Raw red peppers and yellow peppers are just fine. Cooked green peppers cause no issues.

So, almost 21 years later, and my mother STILL puts raw green pepper in every salad she makes and then tells me, "I'll never understand why you're so picky about this. You used to eat green pepper all the time when you were little." :rotfl: She just can't comprehend that it's not that I don't LIKE them, it's just that I can't eat them.

???

You may be onto something...what I have no idea. But that is very interesting. Off to google...

thanks!

Just google and well, I don't know. Can one be intolerant to some, but not all!

Here is a copy and paste:
Nightshade vegetables are in the Solanaceae family of plants. Among them are tomato, potato, eggplant, and peppers of all kinds, except black pepper. Tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, cayenne, and Tabasco sauce are also classified as nightshade foods.

I don't have issues (that I Am aware of) with tomato or potato or paprika. But spices in high qty do more than just hurt my mouth. They don't agree with me at all. That said, I do have a little cayenne in things just fine. Not sure about the rest.

I had never heard of this group of vegetables before (with the label). Appreciate the comment! Thx.

When I was between 12 and 14 I used to have a terrible time digesting raw food. I vomited almost daily.

The worst culprits. . .carrots, onions, tomatoes and peppers. I still can't eat them raw in any kind of quantity. It's like I just can't digest them and they sit like a rock in my stomach. Sounds like what you are dealing with OP. What does help is taking enzymes. I usually make a tea with apple cider vinegar. . .a cup of warm water with 2 Tbs apple cider vinegar and some honey. I drink this about 1/2 hour before I eat and it really helps.

Glad to ... sortof help? Heh. :)

I don't know if you can be sensitive to only some, but I know cooking does cut the whatever is in nightshade, and there are different levels of it in different things so it *could* be that you are sensitive but cooking kills enough of it in potatoes - but not eggplant?

Dunno about tomatoes, hmm. I don't know if some plants have more of the stuff than others to the extent that one would affect you and one wouldn't, if you were sensitive to it.

I dunno, maybe it's something else entirely, I just noticed the two things were nightshade and know ppl have allergies or whatever to it. Can't hurt to ask a doc at some point, though just not having eggplant and peppers can work, heh.

Plants in the nightshade family have one of two types of edible parts, either the roots or the fruits, but never the leaves, which are toxic. It is entirely possible to be able to eat only the nightshade tubers but not nightshade fruits; the chemical makeup of the two parts of the plant are very dissimilar because of the influence of photosynthesis.

As anyone who has ever grown potatoes can tell you, green is not a good thing with most plants in this group. Potatoes that have been exposed to sunlight during the growth process begin to turn green, a condition known as "sunburn" -- the green parts of the tuber are toxic. Green peppers tend to be much harder to digest than "bell" peppers of other colors; most of the time they are the same variety of pepper, but the green ones are harvested while only half-ripe, they would change color if left on the plant longer. I haven't bought green peppers in years, not only do they give my whole family digestive fits, but I find the "pepper flavor" is too dominant; I prefer the more subtle flavors of the colored peppers.

My issue is cruciferous green plants -- can't tolerate them. I'm not allergic, just intolerant, and I wouldn't die if I ate them, but I'd be miserable for the better part of a day and wouldn't get anything done, so I just avoid them entirely. Also, I can't tolerate quinoa -- I'd really love to be able to eat it, but it makes me feel like death warmed over.

DS can't eat peaches; they won't stay down. When he was little we had a running war with my MIL because every time she babysat she fed him peaches, and he invariably threw up in the car on the way home. She just would NOT believe us when we told her he could not tolerate them -- until one day she made the mistake of giving them to him early in the visit, and he threw up all over her living room carpet. Told ya'

Both DD and myself have a hard time with fresh pineapple. Our lips got really swollen. While I have bad allergies to shrimp, noone ever mentioned pineapple before. I'm not allergic to Pina Coladas :worship:

I can't eat canteloupe - makes me vomit in a very short time. I used to eat canteloupe all the time growing up. We grew them in our garden. Fresh, sliced in half, a little salt and pepper... great stuff. But around 11 or 12 years old it started and I finally narrowed it down after a few years that it was canteloupe. I can eat all other melons, but I have to avoid canteloupe like the plague - and anything that has it in it, which excludes a lot of fruit bowls since there is often canteloupe in with the other fruit and I can't risk it. :(
