DH carried a bale of wheat straw about 2 blocks on Saturday. A neighbor was done with their yard and since Lowes was sold out DH asked the neighbor to buy their leftovers - they said just take it. Anyway he was itchy on Saturday night and woke up yesterday with welts all over his body but mainly on his hands, arms, waistband and ankles. We figured it was the wheat straw and found a lot of info online about straw itch mites. Benadryl and Calamine lotion arent helping at all so he's going to the dr today. Anyone ever have this before? How long did it last? Was there anything that made it better?

So sorry to hear that. Last year my daughter broke out in a rash and hives all over her body after playing in a hay maze at a pumpkin patch. But hers was gone within 24 hours. I gave her a bath asap, and the only thing we treated her with was oral Benadryl.

I sure hope he gets better soon! I can imagine how miserable he must feel.

Luckily the Dr was able to see him at 11:10 this morning. He said the Dr. wasnt so concerned about how/why he got it but more about getting rid of it. They gave him three prescriptions including Prednisone and a steroid cream. The Dr. doesnt give drugs for nothing so that tells you how bad it was.

I can tell you one thing, neither of us will ever use wheat straw again without gloves and bathing completely afterwards.

Watch that rash closely. A DF of mine's DH got a massive case of Staph from carrying in their Christmas tree a few years ago. My DH got it from a blister he had from Yoga and I myself was just diagnosed and I am a total germ-a-phobe. I think I got mine from absent mindedly scratching a small itch near my neck last week and it's been spreading since then. When my rash started I used Cortisone because it works on everything... well not Staph. I didn't know it was staph at the time though, it looked like a bug bite and was itchy. Since the Cortisone works by shutting down the immune response it actually lets the Staph flourish which is why mine spread:headache:. If it gets worse or spreads get to the Dr immediately. The best way to tell if it is spreading is to mark the borders with a pen, this is what the Dr did to my DH's foot when it invaded his lymph system and caused purple lines to work up his foot.
