Majority influence!
Asch did a study on majority influence. They had a group of people, all except one are stooges, say what they think is the longest line out of three. The stooges are there to try and convince the naive participant that the line they choose is the longest, even when it obviously isn't. It turns out that 1 out of 3 people will defer to the majority. When one other stooge guesses differently to the others, then the conformity falls to 5%.

Well, that's about it. Then there's a long discussion into why people conform to the majority. Things about how we don't want to be viewed as different so we go along with everyone else, no matter how crazy it is. To link in with the jury, this means that those who are insecure or have low self-esteem will just join whichever side has the majority of people, or they'll be persuade into it with peer pressure.

Minority influence.
I don't remember the name of the guy's who did this study... But they had about 5 people, one of which was a stooge, to decide on the amount of compensation a victim gets after an injury. In one group, the stooge is shown where he would sit, and in the other group, he chooses where he sits. The stooge will try to get the group to have the compensation at $3,000 instead of the $10,000-$25,000 everyone else was choosing. In the group where the stooge chose where to sit, the group were more likely to agree with him because he gives off a confident vibe. When the stooge is shown where to sit, he has less influence on the group. In a second case, if the stooge chooses to sit at the head of the table, he will have even more influence and be seen as consistent and confident. The study was a mock trial, so it is unknown if the effect could be replicated in the classroom, but times in history has shown that minorities have influenced the majority into adopting their views over time, but this effect might not work in the jury room where there is limited time in coming to a decision.
