Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

Surprised/not surprised.

Florida is under the 80/20 rule - If a tipped employee spends more than 20% of their workweek, or over 30 consecutive minutes, on tasks that do not produce tips (e.g., cleaning, restocking, setting tables), the employer cannot take a tip credit for that time.
Do they have to post this somewhere that all employees can see it? How many employees actually know this exists?

I'm assuming that tips are pretty good, so how many employees are willing to stand up and say something for fear of losing their jobs? Florida is an at-will state; an employer may terminate an employee for any legitimate reason, with or without explanation or warning.

Sounds to me like CBS is taking advantage of employees.

I’m not sure if required to post. The laws keep getting adjusted too adding an extra layer of ambiguity. Making it all a little less concrete. Some employers take advantage of what they can get away with, then there’s also slick litigious opportunists lol.

I have to say, I was very excited to visit the shop late last year. We purchased a slice of cake.... and it wasn't very good. Honestly, for us, not worth the hype or queue we joined. It was by no means terrible, but it wasn't good either.

I agree. It wasn’t terrible, but it was not great either. For us, it was one and done.

I thought you have to be a regular customer in order to effectively boycott something. The purpose of a boycott is to decrease spending from a specific baseline; if your baseline is already at bottom zero, it's difficult to see how a boycott would have a measurable impact.

The great thing is each guest can decide for themselves if they think the restaurant is an ethical business that is worth the cost. Or not.
It matters zero what others think.

Boycotts can be very effective here in DC. We have a transient demographic to a certain extent and postings of restaurant reviews, shop prices, service ratings etc are depended upon when making choices of where to spend one’s money.

A lot of people including myself may be on the fence about a certain place of business. If I am hearing that there are unfair practices going on then I may give that business a pass. So many choices, so little time.

DC businesses also depend on tourist dollars more than perhaps a less traveled city. Those 30 covers from out of towners at your restaurant can make or break a small place. A good online reputation goes far. A poor one is deadly.

California where I live is also at will but it takes A LOT of documentation and time to fire someone. Retaliation is not legal as well so if employees speak up they shouldn't fear losing their job and if they do... well, they'll probably have a strong case.

I've been boycotting the place since they had the gaul to charge $22 for a piece of frozen cake.
I knew this place was BS from day one and called it out. I was thinking $27 for a chicken salad sandwich was outrageous, but this just confirms the delusion of the people running this place.
You're not just paying for the dish itself, you're also paying for the location, the ambiance, and the overall theming of the experience.
If you do not fall within their intended target demographic, then this experience may simply not be for you. Leave it alone! Let others who appreciate this stuff enjoy in peace.

That's exactly what I'm doing...but go off ✌️

$22 for a piece of frozen cake in a pretty building is not an experience.

I’ve dined at other restaurants on the Boardwalk and have not had the same scenario with price versus quality vs experience.

I’m not preventing anyone from appreciating or enjoying this place so your comment is odd to me, no offense. I do feel that the place has been polarizing and controversial from the beginning but I am not actively telling anyone or physically preventing anyone from going. I’m stating my opinion. The beautiful thing about a public discussion board is to have views from all angles and so long as the discourse is civil, I thinks it’s a great thing. You enjoy the spot, and I’ll refrain. No harm no foul.

Respectfully asking, how do you know if you've never been? Eating in a whimsical environment can be a fun experience.

I understand if the pricing is disappointing to you, but calling for the building to rot without ever stepping inside is an extreme reaction.

The food does not match the rest of the experience. It's easy to build a pretty building, but to actually have good food is apparently a challenge. I have never been but friends have gone and I trust their opinion. They felt the same way.
