Can you smoke in public places in California?

It has been so many years since you could smoke in restaurants here that it didn't even occur to me that you might be able to there...I really hope not, that wouldn't be good for our son's asthma!

I think California's laws are similar to Arizona's in that you cannot smoke inside restaurants and you can only smoke in designated areas outside.

There is no smoking anywhere in the DLR (including DTD and hotels) except in certain areas. We have asthma too. The smoking areas in the parks I know of are: across from Soarin' in DCA near the bathrooms (I think there is another spot in DCA but I'm not for sure where), near the boat launch for Tom Sawyer Island, and off to the right of IASW. Outside of DLR I believe the rule is nowhere within 20-25 feet of the entrance to a building, no restaurants, hotels, stores, etc.

you can smoke at both the parks (:sad2:)

I know how you are feeling, I feel the same with my son.

HOwever, it must be in the designated area, no buildings...

If you haven't been, I recommend scouting out the map for these areas and avoid them, I have found that to be very possible.

Please note that I have also made many people put them out in the parks and I report them to closest cast member.

Kids should not have to deal with it, especially kids with asthma like ours.

So stand strong and be aware and you should be just fine! :goodvibes

Thanks so much for all of the responses!

I think as long as restaurants are smoke free then we'll be ok. He knows how to avoid it when walking outside. I laugh because he's loud about it "Mom, let's cross the street, there is someone SMOKING right there." I used to shush him but now it just sort of makes me laugh. ;)

California has some of the strictest smoking laws in the country. This includes public beaches, and even some cities have bans.

It should be noted in regards to restaurants, that some restaurants do allow smoking on outside patios, at least here in Los Angeles. I have NEVER seen this allowed anywhere in the DLR area though.

I know DTD is smoke free unless in designated areas so I'm fairly certain this includes the outside restaurant patios.

I have asthma and have never had any trouble at DLR at all. The most may be when I smell it a little as I'm quickly walking past one of the few smoking areas. If you don't stop and sit in one of those places, you will be fine. Not that it couldn't happen, but I've never been around someone smoking in the wrong place.

One place I really noticed the smoking was walking through Downtown Disney outside. There are no designated smoking areas there, one can smoke pretty much anywhere, walking around, etc. It made it slightly uncomfortable for us when we ate outside at La Brea Bakery and people were sitting on the edge of the fountain right near that smoking.

I tend to notice it much more when it isn't everywhere than when it is.

There are 3 or 4 designated smoking areas in each park. They're marked on the maps. In DCA, there's on in a corner of the backlot between Monsters and Muppets, one across from Soarin', one behind GRR, and one near the pizza place. In DLR, there's one by the water across from haunted mansion, one along the river near thunder mountain, and one near the matterhorn by the subs. I think that's all of them. Smoking's not allowed in any building, restaurant, or line. Or anywhere else outside of the designated areas.

That's funny because we NEVER noticed it. But you are right there is no designated area:

From DLR website:
Smoking Areas
For the comfort of all of our Guests at the Disneyland Resort, smoking is only permitted in the following designated areas:
Disneyland Park
New Orleans Square outside Harbor Galley
Frontierland near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Fantasyland near Matterhorn Bobsleds
Main Entry Plaza outside both theme parks
Disney's California Adventure Park
Hollywood Pictures Backlot near Muppet*Vision 3D
Golden State near Soarin' Over California
Golden State near Grizzly River Run
Paradise Pier near Mulholland Madness
Downtown Disney District
Smoking is prohibited inside stores, dining areas and restrooms.

ETA: The one place I did notice smoke was outside the gates. People couldn't wait to get into the Esplanade to light up?!?

Interesting, we were taking a break in the restaurant section on paradise pier when a lady lit up right there. It was definitely NOT a designated smoking area.

My 6 yr old daughter does the same thing, makes me laugh so hard :rotfl2: and Im not stopping her because it is really gross to walk through someone's 2nd hand smoke

rest assured Op, there is no smoking in restaraunts..disneyland or not in caliornia.. now as far as DLR and DCA goes--there is certain area's that the smokers are suppose to be in, so for your DS i think he should be ok!

I hate when that happens. Unfortunately, there are inconsiderate people out there who don't think the smoking policies apply to them!

A few years ago, a cast member was directing a guest to the smoking area inside CA. The guest asked why there weren’t more convenient smoking areas available for smokers in such a large park. The cast member nicely explained that Disney also has to take their young guests safety into consideration too. And those lite cigarettes are at face level with young kids, and Disney doesn’t want to chance little faces being burned in crowds by cigarettes or ashes. I never thought about that danger until that moment.

My parents were both smokers and, trust me, I was very aware of that danger. ;) Smokers are aware of it, too. Even people rude enough to smoke outside of the designated areas generally keep the cherry cupped.

One thing I noticed at DTD. While we were waiting in line at Vault 28 on the 17th. I noticed a couple smoking at the Uva bar. I guess this is alright as the bartender brought out a ashtray.

According to ARS 32-601.01, "There shall be no smoking within 20' of any window, door or vent". I know this as I used to have to enforce this at work. Within one week of the law going into effect, our company had 2 complaints filed against us,customer vs customer. The company was warned, not the customer. From what I understand, the city of Mesa has a very 'strict' no smoking law. You can only smoke on your own property. You can't smoke walking down the street,(yet breath in all the exhaust fumes),or even driving your car. :confused3
