I want to buy all of us ponchos at the start of our trip to keep in my backpack just in case. If it does not rain and we do not need them during our trip, will they let me return them for a refund with a receipt? I know people have kept their receipt to exchange ponchos with rips and holes, so I'm wondering if anyone has been able to return them. Thanks! :)

That plan seems a bit dishonest somehow. Why don't you buy cheapie ponchos at the Dollar Store? We take a few of these per person during the rainy season. They're nice because they're disposable being so inexpensive-unlike the Disney ponchos which, if I bought one, would have to be dried off and refolded.

We used ours last time. Mine and my DH's are still in good shape, so we'll reuse them and buy a new for DS. I'm sure you have some need, some time for a decent quality poncho. They're sturdier than the really thin cheap ones. If you must return something, but it at home and return it when you get back. The parks often times run out of ponchos.

Why not just wait until it rains before buying them? Every gift shop has them, so it's not like you'd have to go far to find them. Having said that, I don't see why you couldn't return them as long as you never open them. And FYI, you don't need to keep the receipt to get them replaced if they get ripped; it's pretty obvious they were purchased at Disney. ;)

I spent $12 at Dicks Sporting goods and got 6 of them, disposable. Easy. I've heard the dollar store has them cheaper.

When it starts to rain you can buy them Everywhere! Personally, if your plan is to use Disney ponchos - I would not bother buying them and then having to lug around all that extra weight in your backpack. Just buy them when you need them. We went last week and had lots of rain, our plan was to bring the dollar ponchos from Target because they were so small and lightweight, and if they didn't cut it then we would purchase the Disney ones. Even with the downpours we were able to plan around them and once used umbrellas, and never even actually opened the cheap ponchos.

The cheap disposable ones at Target (Coleman) are about $0.99 to $1.29 each. They are super compact and easy to carry. They are reusable if you fold them up nicely. They have been my poncho of choice for the last couple trips. This year I'll supplement them with a few micro-mini umbrellas for the quick rains where it's not wroth getting a poncho out.

Edit: Missed your post wgeo. You nailed it. :thumbsup2

any point to brining a windbreaker with a hood that folds into it's own pouch?

I wouldn't call it dishonest - if they are unused, what's the harm? Not sure on the actual policy though, OP.

But I agree - why not just buy them when you need them? If it's rainy, every store at every turn will have LOADS of them for sale. So you certainly won't have a hard time finding any. We prefer to do this so we don't need to carry anything around, and only buy the poncho when/if we need it.

No, you can't return the ponchos just because it didn't rain. Of course you could duck into any store and buy them when it starts raining and then you don't have to worry about having wasted money on them.

I'd think about getting cheap folded ponchos at home and bringing them along if that's what you want to do. Then you can throw them out when they're no longer needed and you don't have to worry about lugging around wet ponchos.

Just invest the $3 per and go buy good camping ponchos at Target or Walmart before you go. They are far cheaper there than at Disney, and those ponchos are much higher quality ... plus they don't look like 80% of the rest of the ponchos people are wearing around the park, so it's easier to pick out your group in the rain.

The ponchos Disney now sells are clear plastic, for just that reason.

We have had our Disey ponchos for years. We take them every trip. We go mostly in the summer and always need them at least once during our trip. If you go often I would thnk of them as an investment. LOL! I would never take an umbrella into the parks, it's too crowded to use them. We have used the cheap ones too. But, I felt like they stuck to me and I did't like the feel of them.

The ponchos aren't in packaging so returning them simply because you didn't use them may not be an option. When I bought our family new sets last year I don't recall seeing or being told any rules on poncho returns. I will say the ponchos last for YEARS! I bought a set in 2000 that lasted until 2014 when I just decided to get fresh new ones. They are very nice quality and we also use them on water rides.

These are nice and I would carry one of these in the cooler months when you may want a light jacket too. However, be warned that many are not water resistant, and those that are, may not be as water-resistant as you need them to be. They may be good for a quick light rain, but completely saturate in a Disney downpour.

I buy a ton of the very cheap ponchos before every trip. I also use them for Splash Mountain, Kali River, etc., and of course when it rains. Also to sit on if we are watching a parade and the pavement is wet. When we are done, in the trash they go or we hand them to others getting on rides if that's why we are using them. I carried wet ponchos around in Ziplocs in my backpack once and decided never again....folding them up and handing them all out over and over, off and on, off and on, etc...To me, and I know I'm probably in the minority, it's worth the extra cost. We have nice ones we keep at home for other uses, but I don't bring them to WDW.

For those interested in seeing the "99cent" emergency ponchos in action. They work very well. They are full sized, but very thin. We did dry and reuse them throughout the trip as much as we could. They are VERY portable. Slip it in your pocket portable. Target has them for $1.50 from what I see now. I just bought a bunch on Amazon for $1.50 each shipped. Couldn't find a 99cent price anymore.

Sorry, tinypic rotated the image.

I found some .99 cent ones at Academy sports yesterday. Can't say how good they are as I haven't opened one yet.

Looking on their website, they look identical to the ones I've gotten at Target and Amazon (I think all "emergency" ponchos are pretty much the same). So they should look like the photo I posted when in use.
