Update:

Chase confirmed that merchant credits count as payments towards the statement balance, thus lowering the total amount due by the due date. As long as the credits post before the due date, they count. They even confirmed my total credit amounts and gave me a new total amount due.

Wow! Good to hear this. It must be relatively new; it's probably been 1-2 years since I SM'd them about it. Maybe they've lightened up a little. It does make sense.
