Rain Ponchos

We go the first week of June, which I understand can mean a lot of rain. Does anyone know where I can buy the Disney rain ponchos ahead of time? I'm having a tough time finding them and my kids (who are teens) won't wear them unless they are 'cool'. I bought the ugly orange ones for a trip to Disneyland in CA years ago and they have never let me live it down. So either Disney or as my daughter said a purple one would be really cool.

They are available in every resort and every store in every park, almost.

The ones they sell now are clear.

I hear walmart sells ponchos for $.99 or so, but they don't have Mickey on them.

Target sells the cheap clear ones.(and I just read about a dollar store having some but only child sizes right now) In the camping section of Taget they sell some Coleman ponchos($9)- heavier weight- dark green I bought that for my too cool :smooth: tween and he wore it. He refused to wear the clear one although my dd loved the clear one so she could still show off her "cute outfits" Her theory was she spent time picking out the outfit she wanted everyone to see it!(she is under 10 though) Good luck and I thought when it started to rain they would wear whatever I had- nope too cool tween walked around without one rather than wear the clear.

Disney Ponchos are thicker and sturdier. But they take up bulk carrying around if you think you might need them. $1 disposable ponchos from Target/Walmart/Camping Store are very compact and you can throw them out when you are done. But they are very thin.

You can buy navy or bright yellow at Target in the camping section, or just about any sporting goods store.

We will bring the disposable ones from the dollar store for our August trip, but if it is REALLY rainy we will buy the Disney ones. The disposable ones really are poor quality, but they worked out OK last time we got caught in a downpour at AK.

They are available at every park and resort but you have to ask for them, they keep them under the counter until it rains and then they bring them right out....the ones at Walmart are cheap and price but you get what you pay for, they fall apart and tear easily.

I have purple and pink ones that I got from Wal-Mart that are about the same weight as the WDW ones. I also have several adult and child WDW ponchos. As someone else said, they do add some bulk, but I have tried the cheap thin ones, and they drove me crazy. They just blew all over the place therefore not providing much protection from the rain! I went back to the tried and true WDW ones. I have tried leaving them on the stroller (although my days as part of the "stroller brigade" are over now :sad1: :) to avoid carrying extra weight, but it never failed to come a down pour when we were away from the stroller! Now I just suck it up and carry them in my backpack.

If you are flying, I think that the Disney store at MCO sells them too. So if you must have the real thing, you could get them there.

We bought the ponchos from the dollar section at Target. They ripped the second time we went to use them, and we ended up having to buy the Disney ones. They are much better quality, and lasted our entire 8 day trip and we are saving them for next trip! We ended up using the torn ones to cover our stroller during rainstorms. Have Fun!

I also buy the cheap ones from Walmart or Target. Last year Target had red, blue and green ones for .99/each. I just use them one day then throw them away because I can't ever get them folded back up (no I can't fold a map either :teeth: ) As long as they are new and in the package they will fit in my shorts pocket if necessary, if I don't carry a backpack.

Thanks guys and thanks for understanding the importance of color and being cool. Maybe we'll just wait and get the Disney ones at the park. Java, you cracked me up because my girls would feel the same way...how could they possibly want to cover up the cool outfits they had carefully color and jewelry coordinated....Much better to be miserable and wet.....

It'll be so hot in June you won't need the heavy-weight ponchos. Get several of the cheap ones at a dollar store, and carry one for each person into the parks in your fanny pack or pockets. Just toss after use; they're great!

Please listen to this voice of experience:

We visited WDW in late May/early June. Of the 10 park days we had, it rained a lot on 6 of them. On two of the days it rained all day.

We had all kinds of rain gear. The $1 ponchos are like wearing dry cleaner bags. They may work if you don't want to get wet on Splash Mountain, but are otherwise unpleasant.

We each had a heavier weight poncho from Walmart. If I had it to do over again, we would have each had a light weight rain coat, or a wind breaker and a ball cap.

I hated wearing the hood. It is hard to see, looks dorky and falls of if there is any wind. A ball cap works better.

It is very easy for a poncho to turn inside out when you (or esp. a kid) take it off. Then the next time, the wet part ends up next to your skin.

Bring more than one pair of shoes. We got caught in a soaking rain waiting for Fantasmic that left our shoes wet for days.

If you all end up soaked, remember the dryer in the hotel laundry room. Better to spend a few bucks with the dryer than to be hanging dripping clothes around the room for days.

When it rains, you get cold, even if it was a hot day. Your skin is wet, then you go into the AC of a ride, store or restaurant and freeze. So sometimes it is better to bring more clothes than just shorts.

Of the parks, MK is best on a rainy day. There are so many inside attractions and they are so close together. AK is miserable becuase almost everything is outside.

Good luck and may you have lovely weather! :goodvibes

My problem is I'm the one who usually ends up carrying the back pack with all the 'stuff'. I try to take the least amount possible as I don't want to haul a heavy load around for 8 hours. I keep going back and forth with this , but to me carrying 5 ponchos around in anticipation of rain makes my back hurt thinking about it. I agree with all of you who say the really cheap ones are like dry cleaning bags and with the humidity they can be uncomfortable. I may just wait to see if it rains and make a mad dash to buy the nearest Disney poncho. I live in Arizona and to be honest I think I'm the only one in the family with a raincoat. I think I'm over planning, but I hate the thought of being unprepared.

Tracidee we went with another family who had kids and the youngest was 5 at the time. My friend purchased fanny packs for all the kids and had them all carry their own items: ponchos, sunglasses, disposable cameras etc. They weren't heavy for the kids and they really liked having their own packs. That left room in my friends backpack for souvenirs and other items and it wasn't half as heavy if she had to be the one to carry all the items. Just an idea. :thumbsup2

We bought the Disney ones when DD was 5, she is now 19.
She has used them for GS camp for years. :bounce:
DH and I plan on using them for our trip this Feb. :cool1:
