Rain Forecasted Every Day!

Well...just be glad you're coming tomorrow and weren't here the beginning of this week. It's been raining and overcast for 3 days straight....I'm talking we've only had moments of sunshine. It's supposed to be the same today and then returning to our regularly scheduled afternoon only showers.

As for the poncho issues...I don't get how the disposable ones are cheaper if you are considering going to Disney more than once in your life. We still have the yellow ponchos as well and have had them for about 15 years now!!! I'd say they have been well worth the money we spent. We still use them every weekend! I have a small backpack that I just pack enough into for how many ppl we have (we have about 10 ponchos for when family comes) and off we go.

OT--but last weekend, I was cracking up when we were at DHS standing outside Sci-Fi. I've never used the dollar store ponchos, but have heard about them on here. Some guy was yelling at his wife that she shouldn't listen to "them" and that these ponchos disintigrate when you touch them.

OK so I probably could have rephrased it better so it didn't sound as "rude" but I think it is a valid question. Say the OP family (please don't think I am picking on you it is just an example ) goes for 10 days, and has a rain ever day that requires a poncho, she is only $2.00 off a resuable one that she can bring home with her, use at home and bring back to WDW if she makes another trip. That saves 40 yes 40 gigantic plastic bags going into the rubbish. Thats one family now times that by the amount of people that are doing the same thing.

According to the Backstage tour, all trash at WDW is hand-sorted for recycling. So even if someone chooses to get disposable rain gear, rest assured it is not likely to end up in a landfill (if they throw it away at WDW).

Thanks for mentioning Disneys contain latex, My DH is allergic also to latex. I would have never thought about it. Latex is in alot of things we don't realize.

We bought the yellow ponchos a dozen years ago and shlepped them to and from the parks for the next couple of visits. We now leave them at home. They were a big pain in the buns.

First of all, they don't fold up very small. Therefore, they take up alot of real estate in your 'park bag'. Then around three pm and it rains HARD for about half an hour and then it's done. The sun comes out and starts to bake you. At that point, you have to either figure out what to do with the ponchos, or die. Even if you could easily fold them back up tiny, you can't put them back in your 'park bag' because they are wet. You are left with carrying the things around. Ugh.

Instead, I buy a bunch of 99 cent disposable ponchos. I pack enough so that each of us would have a poncho for every day of our vacation and I make sure that the 'park bag' always has one for each of us. If it rains, we don the poncho. Once it stops raining, we roll them up and stick them in the mesh outside pocket of my photo backpack, so they can't get anything else wet. At the end of the day, those used ponchos get thrown out. (They're probably torn up anyway.)

Since WDW recycles, they won't be dumped in a landfill. Instead, they are remade into plastic stuff (like ponchos). It should also be noted that we've never actually needed ponchos on more than a few days per vacation.

Don't be afraid of a little rain! We just got back from a week in Orlando on the 15th
On the 11th, we were in The MK, had a great morning, got there at rope drop and did all of Fantasy Land in like an hr. Well, around 3 pm, we had nasty
thunderstorms, and it wasn't quick ones, it rained for hrs! We got our ponchos out, and had a ball, the best part was, the rain cleared the park out
alot, Buzz had a 15 minute wait!

The florida forecasts in the summer always call for rain. I've seen it show rain for us for a two week trip and only had it rain once or twice. You just never know and its not uncommon for afternoon showers that quickly clear.

I don't mean to be rude but couldn't you just "be bothered" with drying a reusable poncho and not fill up the landfills with more "disposable" plastic. Really does it take that much time out of your trip to hang it up at the end of the day in the shower?

I am all for saving the environment and all, however, YES, IT would take WAY too much time for me to wear the ponchos, after it stopped raining, take them off, have to exit the park and take them dripping wet to the bus stop. Wait a good 20 minutes for the bus, spend another 20 or so ON the bus to the hotel. Then I would have to take them to the room and lay them out, walk back to the bus. Wait another 20 minutes for the bus to come back around, ride it BACK to the park.........mess around with the entrance, bag check, etc just to get back INTO the park..........all when I could just take off my wet poncho, toss it in the nearest garbage can, and be done with it!...........so............MY VOTE IS FOR THE PLASTIC THROW AWAYS.

Those of you environmentalists that want to waste good Disney time, feel free..........(not being rude or judgemental, or anything, but MY Disney time is too valuable!)

For those of you talking about how WDW recycles random sheets of plastic like ponchos, what sort of recycling facilities do you think Florida has????

Heck, the wrong cap in a batch of properly number-labeled plastic bottles can destroy a whole batch of recycling, and that's in super-environ-conscious western WA... I think that anyone thinking they can recycle non-numbered sheets of plastic is under a pretty big delusion.


Are ponchos at WDW 12 bucks? Seems odd, since everything at DLR seems to be more expensive, and they are only 7/8 bucks in Anaheim. Odd. Mine has lasted about 7 wearings. The neck is starting to rip, but that isn't bothering me at all. I'm more than happy to shake it off (away from people), fold it up, put it in a bag I'll keep for the whole trip, and be happy I've done my part. Plus, I've tried a dollar store poncho, and it felt like saran wrap. NOT a good feeling!!!!



And as for the weather, yes, it thunderstorms every day in FL that time of year. It's OK.

Be careful of the re-useable Disney ponchos - they contain latex. I am allergic to latex. So far, all the nice, thicker gauge reuseable ones that I have found in camping stores have had latex in them. The disposable ones have not. So, for me and my family, we will use the disposable.

That is good to know for those who are allergic, and please believe I wasn't making a sweeping statement that everyone should use the reusable ones I understand that there are issues such as these that require the disposable ones.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and take you at face value that you weren't trying to be rude, but be advised that there are some good reasons to use the disposable ponchos. First is cost. They run about $1 each and therefore save significant money for a family over the ones sold at WDW. Second is the latex issue already covered by a PP. Third, they are much lighter and smaller to carry- a big deal to my grandkids who like to have their own "stuff" with them in the parks. Fourth, it certainly is a bother to try and hang up 5 ponchos in the one bathroom you get in the typical resort room at WDW (or anywhere else). Fifth, even on 10-day summer visits to WDW, we've never used more than 2 or 3 ponchos per person, so the cost offset over an entire trip doesn't even come close.

Oh and BTW, I'm the one who started the recycling program at my current place of employment, so I really don't need a "save the planet" lecture.

I am sorry that you felt that my posts were a lecture on save the planet, my first question was just that a question on why you would choose to use disposabe over reusable. I happen to think that the reasons that people have given are nothing that would cause me too much concern and bother that I would use the disposable ones, but I understand that people have different priorities to me there will be things that are high on your list that aren't on mine and vice versus. Again I am sorry if I have offended you in any way.

Thank you for this information it is great to know, it wouldn't change my mind for my own personal situation but it is nice information to have.

Again I would like to apologise if I have said anything that has caused offence, I have tried really hard to word my replies and my posts in a way that won't but I realise that even by doing that people may still read them the wrong way.

I do disagree with many of the comments on the why to use them however, obviously it is their decision to use them not mine I am not going to lose any sleep over it.

We still have our WDW ponchos from 3 1/2 years ago. We bought two more on our trip almost two years ago. Now, if I can find where I've put them, we'll take them back in November.

It pretty much rains a little bit almost every day. When we were there two years ago in November, it poured off and on during our Epcot day! Fine with us--kept the crowds at bay!

Bumbershoot; or anyone else interested, that $10-12 poncho will last forever, that's b/c Disney will replace it if it is damaged. Next time you're at DLR, just show them and they will most likely just give you another one. And that's not just same trip, either. I accidentally tore one in an unfortunate stroller accident; just showed it to them and they replaced it! Our ponchos are now on their 4th WDW trip; and they're great for other places b/c I can recognize my family in their mickey ponchos pretty quickly enywhere else

welcome to florida lol. .everyday there is a 50% chance it will rain but it sometimes does and it will be for like 10 minutes then stop. this is why i hate living in floirida.. haha only good thing is im 30 min away from DISNEY

DH & I go so often that we splurged (and saved both the environment & our pocketbook) and bought ripstop nylon ponchos that fold up into their own pouch and are much lighter than the plastic to lug around the "world". They fit great and really keep you dry, even in a downpour. Plus they dry in a few minutes and they are not hot while you are wearing them.

Just a suggestion for those who have issues with disposables.

The rain bands from this is what have been giving us our rainy weather the last couple days. If we could get that to move on out (and then not turn into a tropical system) as it originally was supposed to do, we could return to our "normal" weather!

OP, I would not worry about that. We had the same forecast on a previous visit and though it did rain daily, it was a 30-minute shower which cooled the air. It helped with the humidity a bit. Hopefully you will have the same and it will not "dampen" your days in the parks.

I personally would not do that because I carry a camera bag. I don't think I would want to put a cheap WET poncho in with my $1400 camera.

You are right - to each his own. It is sad that people cannot do what they want without getting a lecture about saving the planet. There are much larger things for people to be concerned over.
