Ragdoll Cats

We have never been cat people! We have been talking to several people and have decided that a ragdoll cat may be a good cat for us. Anyone want to give pros and cons?

have long hair, alot of long hair.

My friend has 2 and they are very sweet, and smart! She taught them to sit, stay and beg!

They are very cute but boy oh boy do they shed. My neighbors have one and it leaves long hair all over the place!

I had one and loved him to death. He was a great cat and very loveing. He also learned how to do tricks by watching our pomeranian.

I think they are great cats but they do shed quite a bit, they tend to mat their hair up so you have to brush them daily, they can be more of a loner cat than others, and the price. When I was pricing them last July after mine passed away I couldn't find any that were less than $1000 for PET QUALITY (this was all over texas, louisiana, mississippi, alabama, and some of florida - non-newspapers)!!! I was heartbroken. I just can't spend that kind of money on a cat.

Price won't be an issue. She is at the shelter. My sister got the sister cat from the same litter and is talking me into getting this one. We are planning to go meet her tomorrow morning.

We have always had dogs (to answer the ? about why no dog) but lost ours this last spring. I am not ready to train a puppy and the barking was so loud. Our back yard does not have a fence and I hear these cats are inside cats only. That about sums it up. That and my sis is insistent that she loves her new cat and she HATED cats before! So, hmmmm.....it's an interesting proposition and change!!!!!!!

April, pictured below, is part Ragdoll. She is a loving, people oriented cat. Because she is not pure bred, I find that she sheds very little and nearly never gets mats. Her coat is very soft. We rescued her from the local shelter.

Because of their temperament, Ragdolls should never be allowed to be outside cats, not that any of my cats are. They're just too laid back.

Some day I hope to get a pure bred ragdoll. They are wonderful animals.

Give her some time. Transitioning from owner to shelter to new owner is difficult. I bet she'll come to you when she's ready. Cats like life on their own terms.....

Aww. Can't wait to see a photo. She probably would do well in a small room with food and water on one side and her litter box on the other.

The cat in that photo I posted came to us when we were in a real adoption mode. She was so traumatized! Poor thing hid under our couch for several weeks. Obviously she did come out to eat and use the litter box but I never thought she'd turn out to be so people friendly.

I call April my feather boa. I can hang her around my neck and she just lays there.

How old is Sophie?

She'll definately come out once she gets a feel for the place, our first rescue was a one and a half when we got her and she hid for days, the second was a kitten and she made herself right at home.

Ragdolls are THE best cat! I have two and they are the sweetest things. They are not aloof like some other cats, they are sometimes referred to as puppy-cats as they have dog-like qualities. They are very docile and trusting so please don't let them out!
They shed, but all cats do. I have 2 pet quality and did not pay $1000 for either of them. I was actually looking ot get a third one and the highest I am seeing is $650.

Our cat is part Ragdoll. We adopted her from the shelter when she was a very small kitten. Pros: She is loving, personable, VERY good with our baby, and just an all-around good pet. She doesn't shed terribly, but she is a mix so maybe that's why

Cons: I will say that she isn't the sharpest tack in the bunch, but she might be the exception to the rule since everyone else is saying that Ragdolls are smart. She really bothers my DH's and sister's allergies. She hates being an only pet since our other cat passed away, but this is somewhat ameliorated by having the baby around now. She seems more chipper having company.

I just wanted to say its great that you are considering adopting a cat. So many need homes.
As far as not being a cat person, I think once you have a cat you will be hooked.

Our purebred ragdoll is as dumb as a rock. We love him dearly but he ain't no Einstein.

Our ragdoll doesn't matt but sheds like mad. He's extremely vocal and does what's called "the ragdoll flop". He just flops over on his side like Arte Johnson used to on Laugh In. Just right over and waits for attention.

Our guy isn't all that affectionate though he loves having company around. He's a bit rambunctious and does play rough. We love him to death.

And when he wants something....LOOK OUT! He will hound you til he gets it!

Too bad NY isn't closer to TX. I know when we got my cat 14 years ago he was pet quality and only $500 so maybe its just the area I'm now living in. I might give the newspapers a try and see what comes up.

Once the cat comes out of hiding try to put her into one room and slowly introduce the house and yourselves to her. My vet recommends one room at a time. For example introduce her to the litterbox area and then the next couple of days to the ajacent(sp??) room. That way she will get use to it over time and not be overwhelmed.
