this is what i've got from the first part of this show for my coursework (all in notes somehow...)
Europe, Canary Islands, Tenerife. March 27th 1977
Los Rodeos, quiet airport in Tenerife. Is only used to small planes landing there.
12:30, Pan Am Flight 1736 gets a call that a bomb exploded at Los Palmas and threats about a second one going off, the main airport on Gran Canaria. Also KLM Flight 4805 has had to make an emergency landing here. 3 other planes have also been diverted there.
Los Rodeos is small, has 1 airstrip (runway). Airtraffic controllers aren't used to so much planes at once. Sunday so only 2 are on duty. KLM passengers go to the lounge to relax.
2:15, Pam Am lands at the airport. 2:30, police confirm there is no other bomb and clear Gran Canaria. the Pan Am is ready to leave but the KLM is refueling. They are filling it up with 55,000 gallons of fuel which takes around 30 mins. Even after the plane was refueled, spanish government has forced the planes to stay on the tarmac for another 2 hours with no explanation.
4:56, KLM's Pilot, *name needed*, asks for permission to take off. 2 Minutes later, the Air Traffic Control allow it. On the Pan Am, the passengers start to notice fog rolling onto the tarmac.
The KLM taxi's down the runway, the air traffic controllers instruct them to go to the end of the runway and do a 180 degree turn and wait for clearance for take off.
Visibility is now down to 300m. Now none of the air traffic controllers can see the planes they are directing and there is no ground radar to help them. Communication is now only available through radio.
5:02, air traffic controllers give Pan Am permission to taxi along the runway behind the KLM. They are then told to turn off at the 3rd exit and wait. 5:06 and 18 secs, air traffic control tell the KLM to wait, but they dont. Instead the KLM pilot accelerates down the runway. 5:06 and 36 secs, the Pan Am co-pilot looks out the windows and is horrified at what he sees. The KLM is heading straight towards the plane. The Pan Am pilot pushes the engines to full throttle and tries to steer out of the way.5:06 and 50 secs, the KLM crashes into the Pan Am at 29kmph. The air traffic controllers hear the crash but they can't see anything due to fog.
The KLM has flown over the Pan Am, crashing into the upper deck. After the impact, the KLm crashes further down the runway. The air traffic controllers sound the alarm. The fire fighters try to put out the fire on the KLM but can't find any survivours. because of the fog, nobody can see the Pan Am is also on fire 450m up the runway with hundreds of people who had survived the impact.
