Hi everyone! I'm back from my first 10K ... just warming up with a mug of green tea! So let's see...

The race was scheduled to start at 11AM this morning. As usual, I slept in and didn't get out the door until 10:15AM. I made it there at 10:45 but there was no parking left and people with cars were still queuing up. Part of me was glad that I wasn't the only late person. Unfortunately, I ended up parking in a plaza which was 3/4 of a mile away! That'll learn me for next time... It worked out since I was able to use the bathrooms in one of the fast food restaurants there and I had a nice warm up by jogging to the start.

The course itself was pretty nice, it went along the waterfront of Whitby (just east of Toronto). It was chilly though and lots of wind from the lake. I think the temperature was -4C (24 F?) not sure what it was like with the wind chill. Parts of the course were snowy/icy and at about mile 5, it got a little tough running on the snow with the wind blowing directly at me. Luckily, it was sunny out! Speaking of the sun ... I kept thinking how dumb I was that I forgot my sunglasses. Turns out, they were on my head the whole time!! I only noticed when I looked down while running through a snowy patch, saw my shadow and noticed the sunglasses. Duh! :rotfl: :rotfl:

My chip time was 57:09 which is my fastest race so far! :yay: I was hoping for a time just under 1:10 so I'm really happy I was able to do it in under an hour. I'm hoping that I can maintain that pace for the 1/2 in January.

I saw one of our vendors from work at the lunch afterward and chatted with her for a bit. She was doing the 10 mile race and I'm thinking she probably won in her age group since she came in shortly after I did. I couldn't stay and watch the 10 mile race awards since I left my change of clothing in the car and it was really uncomfortable standing around in semi-wet clothes.

And I think that's it... my next race might be a 10 miler on Dec 26th but I haven't decided on that yet since that race is about an hour away from me. I'll probably end up doing a 5K instead just before the 1/2 in January.

Thanks for reading!! :flower3:

Congratulations, Vicky on a great race! Amazing time and in those weather conditions, too. Wow! Sounds like it was a very chilly race!

I ran the Las Vegas Running Team Turkey Trot 10K yesterday morning. My husband ran it too. We both were hoping to beat our old 10K times. The course was nothing exciting, it just took place on neighborhood streets in Las Vegas. (I've done this course before) The weather was chilly(for us in the desert at least) being in the 40's. I ended up finishing in 54:22 with a 8:45 pace(5th place in my age group), a new 10K PR time for me. My husband finished in 44:46 with a 7:10 pace, he placed 3rd place in his age group.

We went and picked up our race packets this afternoon for the Turkey Trot - Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam 11K that takes place on Thanksgiving. It's a neat course and you run through the tunnels that were used for hauling supplies to building the Hoover Dam in the 1930's.

Casey - Congrats to you and DH! Those are fantastic times! The 11K race sounds neat! Are they going to put lights in the tunnels or will it mostly be in the dark?

Carol/Joan - I'm not a cold weather fan either! I figured at least it wasn't snowing *lol*

Congrats Casey (and DH) and Vicky!

I've knocked off my first turkey trot of the week -- the Raven Rock Rumble, a 10-mile trail race held in a state park. (23 degrees at the race start -- but at least it was dry!) I guess you'd call this a "wild turkey" trot. Once again this year, I was the undisputed last place finisher <groan> -- finishing a good 20 minutes behind the runner in front of me. <sigh> But it is a beautiful course on rolling wooded trails staged by the area's best race director (IMHO -- but he always takes care of the walkers).

On Thursday (Thanksgiving) I'm doing the "Advice 5 cents 5K turkey trot" -- an Outer Banks tradition. If I get a chance, I'll post a report -- otherwise, I'll catch up later after the "big day".

Enjoy those holiday races, WISH gang!

I ran the Honolulu Turkey Trot 10 mile race. $3.00 entry fee, no medals, no shirts, but lots of prizes.

Watches, Garmins, Ipods are forbidden, as you must predict your finish time on a tongue depressor that you turn in at the finish line.

I predicted 1:30:00, and finished 1:32:16. I was 13.6 seconds average per mile slower than my prediction. I could have come in closer, but cruised the last mile and a quarter down Diamond Head, because I thought I was under my time. Oh well, slower is better.

A friend I train with, was 1 second off her total time, and won 1st place for the finishers over the two hour mark. The winner of the finishers under the 2 hour mark was 2 seconds over his predicted time.

Our team competition, 25 racers per team, and total combined time. My team finished 4th out of 4 teams. We were 2:32 over our total team average. The winning team was 1:32 over their average.

Fun race, if you're ever in the islands for Thanksgiving.

Jeff; the Turkey Trot sounds like fun! I love the concept that the winner is the one with the best sense of himself and his/her own running time, cool and fun idea

DH and I ran the Philadelphia marathon on the 23rd and had a pretty good time. Neither of us had run in the cold before (training is mostly on TMs in the basement or at the gym). The race start was in the low 20's so it was definitely brisk, but the sun was shining and after a mile the cold was no longer a real issue. The race wound through the historic portion of Philia then through University city, past the zoo and into Fairmont Park and along the river to end at the art museum. It was a nice course with a few more hills than I am used to, but nothing major. The only real problem was the black ice through all of the water stations (I suppose this is what happens when you are at the back of the pack in a big race on a cold day). All told I managed to come in at 2:48, beating my previous 1/2 time by a minute. At the end of the race they handed out cups of warm chicken broth-- nothing ever tasted better :thumbsup2

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

I did a 5K turkey trot in Clearwater FL this morning ( i forgot to put it on the list). It was ALOT of fun. About 20,000 people. Not a PR for me, but I was pretty happy with my time of 35:40. I am running a 1/2 marathon on Sunday! :scared1: my First one :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: So I didn't push myself at all for this race.

I spent alot of time dodging strollers and dogs. there were 2 5K races, one competitive 5K (no strollers, dogs rollerblades etc) and a fun 5K which was supposed to start 15 minutes after the competitive. Everyone ended up lining up together and no one was checking bib colors (each race had a different color bib).

For a 5K there was alot of on course LIVE music. probably 6 or 7 different groups playing music. Pretty cool.

The shirt was a tech shirt which was really cool. It only cost 13 dollars to enter the race and most of the fee went to local charities.

It was COLD for this FL girl. In the 40's. I wore capris and my long sleeve wish shirt over my race shirt, thinking I could take off the long sleeve and carry it if necessary. The race truly felt awesome the whole way through (except for a couple of hills).

If you had told me a year ago that I would be running an early morning 5K on thanksgiving followed by a half 3 days later this would have been my reaction::rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao: :lmao:

We'll be off to Canaveral on Saturday to hopefully see the shuttle land and then packet pick up. The 1/2 starts at 6 am on Sunday. I am really excited about it.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!!

Amy

Great runs, everybody!!!!

I ran the Weather Channel 1/2 Marathon in Atlanta Thanksgiving day. It was a comedy of errors getting to the start line. I left my toiletries bag at home which had my body glide as well as my stop watch. I also forgot my compression shorts so I'm suffering from major chafing. This morning, the subway train broke down 1 station from the start (a door wouldn't close) so a train full of people were late to the start. One guy made a good funny, though; he said that there was enough leg power on board, that we should just push the train! It was funny at the time.

I finally started the race (without stretching) about 20 minutes after everyone else except the people on the train with. It was cold (for us in the south), about 30 degrees. I felt awful for about the first 3-4 miles but then I found my "happy place" and got into a good groove. At mile 6, I was a little behind where I wanted to be time-wise. Fortunately, there is a ginormous down hill stretch for the next mile and 1/2 and I was able to kick it in hard. After mile 8, it was mostly uphill with some that were cast iron s.o.b.'s including the famed Cardiac hill from the Peachtree Road Race. The route for the full is 90% of the 1996 Olympic course. The 1/2 course is all part of the Olympic course. It runs through some of the prettiest parts of downtown ATL with some cool sites like the historic Fox Theater and the Gold plated dome of the state capital. After passing the Capital you make a left go up a short hill and make a right. As soon as you make that right, the Olympic rings and the cauldron that held the Olympic flame come into full view. Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves (the former Olympic stadium that was converted after the Games) was in the background. That was a very goose-bump moment. I almost felt world class! It was a great race with good support along the way. The Olympic finish at Turner was special.

I don't know my time. As I said earlier, I left my stopwatch at home and the Atlanta Track Club has yet to post the times online. I'm pretty sure I PR'd, though. I wasn't really going for time. My goal is my first Marathon at Disney in January so this race was kind of a warm up. More of a long/tempo/hill workout. It was a fun one with a GREAT t-shirt!!!! It was a blast.
