Race Reports/Kudos/Encouragement - January 9 - 11

Jim - I did the happy also....

IMG_3510.jpg

At water Stop #11 when our group leader told us we were done. All we had to do was dump the table with water and cups and all into the street, take down the tables, empty the powerade into the streets We stacked the table back where we found them, moved the leftover boxes of water and cups back where we found them and left. The WDW janitors swept everything into the middle of the street and the street sweeper sucked it up. We were NOT allowed to go into the path of the runners to move cups out of the road.

Somebody ask Jim about his laundry night. LOL. Inside joke.:rotfl2:

Another huge thanks to Matt. I was one of those dying on the inside people during the Half when I saw Matt on the overpass. Instantly I felt better and was able to push through to the end. :thumbsup2

:worship: Thanks for being there at the overpass!
That's the hardest part of the race for me and
seeing you up there made me smile and move along to finish :goodvibes

Great reports everyone!! I will only add a few highlights.....

a big thanks to Anne for getting up super early on Friday to cheer for the 5K! That was awesome! The Tusker House character breakfast with Wendy and her brother Ken was delicious and a lot of fun!!

The POP meet was great - I loved seeing "old" friends and meeting new teammates. I'm a little shy in big groups, but did try to make the rounds - still didn't get to talk to everyone, but throughly enjoyed the ones I did get to talk to!

Jim and I were on the 3AM bus Saturday morning. I wasn't completely wide awake when I spotted Matt in the very first row of the bus....and as I walked back to an empty seat I was thinking...gee I didn't know Matt was doing Goofy again! Hah! He got up super early just to cheer - what a guy!!

As usual passing time with WISHers before the starting gun sure helped! Loved seeing Susie cheering by the TTC and Poly and seeing our WISH volunteers at the water stops. And - get this! I actually stopped twice for character photos!! Well, can you consider the MK train engineers characters? Jim and I got a nice photo with them, and I also stopped for a photo with Stitch right before the finish line!! One slight problem during the race - I think I've told too many people about the ideal potty stop - the large facility in the Frontierland cutthrough to Adventureland....it was actually full when I stopped and I had to wait a moment or two for an empty stall. Jim said there were women in the men's side.:scared:

About mile 8 or 9 we (me, Jim, and Anne) started talking to a young man walking by himself and obviously hurting a little bit. Found out that this was his first half - I think he really appreciated having someone to talk to and take his mind off his aches and pains. I think this is one of the biggest plusses of being slow - you have the opportunity to talk to fellow racers. In Philly Anne and I walked almost the entire half with a woman from Chicago, and unbelievably we ran into her in San Antonio too!

I really like the new Donald medal, but thought that the post-race goodies were sorely lacking.

Sunday we were up early again to volunteer for the full. Thanks Kathy for the ride to WWoS!! Good thing Jim knew where our water stop was because the jr team leader was leading us in the wrong direction!! It was so much fun handing out water and cheering as everyone went by.

When our shift ended we grabbed a quick bite to eat at Pop and then headed to the front of MGM to scream team. That was a blast and most people were so glad to hear our cheers. We stayed until the very last person went by.

We also made it to the Boardwalk Bakery for breakfast Monday, a last chance to see a group of WISHers. I have to say that this was an amazing marathon weekend. Thank you to each and every one of you for contributing to an awesome experience. I can't wait til we get to do it again!!

Just wanted to add a thank you to Matt for cheering at the half. Although he said he was recycling phrases, it sure seemed authentic to me!

I only made it to the Pop meet for a few minutes, as we were on our way to a charity dinner for the group DH was running for. I did get to see some people I had met before at the Expedition Everest race. Unfortunately I missed the pictures.

On Saturday morning I was lucky enough to stumble across Maura and Cruella de mom in the B Corral. We chatted for a bit until the race started. It was a great way to make the time go faster. My goal for the race was to finish in under 2:15, and I finished in 2:11:49 so I was pretty happy with that. My hip joint was giving me some problems starting at about mile 7, but I managed to keep going albeit a little slower than the first half of the race. After the race, we took the family to Blizzard Beach. It was a great day for a water park.

Sunday I got up at 2am to go volunteer at the full. I was a course marshal near the start. We were assigned to the red course at about a mile in, just to make sure that the runners followed the correct path. There were supposed to be Disney people come by and set up the cones, but they never showed up. At about 5:35 the OC police came by and said that we shouldn't wait for Disney and that they would set them up. They put about 5 cones in a straight line at a point where the road transitioned from about 3 lanes to 1 lane. I knew that wouldn't work very well, so I started repositioning cones at more of an angle. The end result wasn't perfect, but it was better. There still were a lot of grumpy runners who were running on the left side of the course and had to crowd into everyone else. Sorry to everyone who was ticked off. I did try to shout out to WISH and DR people, but it wasn't easy when we were trying to warn people about the narrowing of the course. After everyone had gone through, we were basically finished, so we walked down to the mile 5 mark to watch the runners go through. Again it was really crowded, so I didn't really get much chance to shout out to people. We stayed there until we saw the sweeper bus load up. They didn't take very many people at that point, and most that they did didn't seem too upset about it.

2009 was a really neat experience, and I will be signing up for the full marathon next year (and probably volunteering at the half). Thanks to everyone who was out cheering.

Somebody ask Jim about his laundry night. LOL. Inside joke.:rotfl2:

Oooooooooo.. I know.. I know !!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Well.. I am still in disney.. sitting in my room at POP.. I am still overwhelmed by this past week.. What an amazing time this has been.. When I get home I will take the time to write a full report.. But for now.. I just want to say...

THANK YOU.. all WISHers.. for reminding me what friendship is...You are all special people... and I am honored to be a part of this wonderful Team.... A group where there are no egos... only one goal.. to be the best we can each be individually.. and even more often... bringing out the best in each other. Thank you a million times over for sharing yourselves with me...

Kathy

Matt. Thanks. I did see you on the overpass and then again in the parking lot after the 1/2. People like you get so much more out of life because you give! Thanks for your service to our Country, dedication and giving spirit! May God always bless you!:cheer2:

Now my shout out. I want everyone to know how proud I am of my wife. She, along with me, finished our first 1/2 last week. She is a seven year breast cancer survivor that had the surgeries, radiation and chemo that go along with that terrible disease. Long story short she had a lot of complications with the surgery vs the radiation. She still has a lot of pain but she manages to walk as many days of the week she can. She walks 2-3 miles at a time and I really didn't know if she could make 13.1. Well she did. She finished just a minute or two after they quit the timing. I check the split times of the last people with times and she was right with them or ahead at all the splits. But she finished. Got her medal. I was running back and forth from the finish line to the medical tent. When she came to the photography gate I almost knocked her down hugging her. :dogdance:

You may be wondering why I didn't run with her. She wouldn't let me. She demanded that I go ahead and run my race. As my Buzz Brigade teammates know I battle a different type cancer. As the Dr that diagnosed my lymphoma told me, I have "a rare type of a rare type of cancer". What I have is not fatal but it is not curable either. I have to do maintenance chemo for two days a week apart every three months. I had to go the day after I got back for a treatment. But it's not the 'bad' chemo. I've seen the bad with my wife and others in the infusion room and believe me, mine is not that bad. I'm good.:goodvibes

Well I've been trainging for the last year for the Disney 1/2. One of my sisters is a coach in Team in Training L&L Society. She talked me into walking after my intial chemo (once every three weeks for 6 months) just to feel better. Well you know how that goes. If I can walk three miles I can run three miles. If I can run three I can run five and..........

So we did it. My two sisters, two brother in laws, and the wife and me all finished. We won. Spent a week at OKW. Enjoyed the parks. Beautiful weather. Enjoyed life. Priceless memories. We won!party:

My only regret is I didn't meet more of you. My Buzzie teammates have been such an inspiration. But I guess that gives me a reason/excuse to come back. As my teammates love to say 'To Infinity and Beyond'!

Mike, great race report. Congratulations to your wife, you, and the rest of the family and friends. :thumbsup2

Wow Mike! Awesome story! Very touching and humbling.

Great job to all of you for finishing the race!!

Bryan

Wow, there are alot of great reports here! Congrats to all :)

I want to thank every WISHer that was cheering the runners on and that volunteered! You guys are awesome. You all really helped me through the race weekend.

Anne, Karen, Susie, Cheryl, I think Pat? and all the other WISHers (sorry if I forgot you) that were there during the full. I just kept looking for you and you did not disappoint! Especially at the turnaround - I was really hurting then. You guys gave me the boost I needed to finish.

Ok, MATT!!!! You so ROCK! When you came and walked with me for that mile and a half I forgot about my knees! That was so incredible of you to do for me and everyone else that you helped. I hope you did well in Houston and I hope to see you and Cheryl again soon. Thank You!!

Becky

blizzard Carol It was great to meet you in the starting corral. Always help to pass the time and alleviate some of the pre-race jitters. I was also happy to see you at the picture spot and hear you beat your time goal. And like you, I am also planning on the full for next year--haven't signed up, but will gear the training for it, knock wood!

Mike Wow! I am always bowled over by stories like yours. The physical and mental strenght it takes for you and your wife to run is truly inspiring. Makes me feel petty for grumbling over my minor running injuries. Hope to meet you next year.

Maura

I'd say better late than never, but this is really good for me!

Sit back and prepare for a novel. This year’s marathon was a major spiritual event and I want to get it all down to remind myself how blessed I am. So, be warned and forgive my long-winded marathon report.

I have to go back to the last 2 years to start. Because of the heat, I added extra walks. Usually, we only walk the water stops. The last 2 years, though, we had to add more. This year, I really wanted to know that I had given it my all and didn’t give up.

The training all went really well and, for the first time, there were no breaks taken in training. Doing tri’s this summer really helped me train through the heat and I felt better prepared than I have been since at least 2006 (my first marathon).

Then, the weather reports started to say that the weather would eb perfect. On the cold side, but perfect for me. That’s when I thought I really could PR this year. Then, as we got closer and closer, the temps kept going up.  Bummer. Still I wanted to give it my all.

Through the years, we debated over starting fast and doing our best before the heat hit and pacing ourselves to not burn out. This year, I decided that I would do all that I could when it was cool and see what happened when the heat came on.

Before I knew it, it was race morning. I was more scared/nervous than I had been since 2006, but I was hoping that would give me the adrenaline I needed. As I started to get ready, there was an mp3 player and speaker with a card on the counter that said, “play me”. The first song was the theme song from Rocky. For those that don’t know, this was the song that got me going this fall after I took a spill in the Grand Rapids half. Perfect. From there, it went to Got to Be Somebody by Nickelback. I had never heard this before, but it got me hopping. The words were so perfect, especially coming from my dh and running partner. To keep it short, lol, I’ll just post the chorus.

Cause nobody wants to be the last one there
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares
Someone to love with my life in their hands
There's gotta be somebody for me like that
Cause nobody wants to go it on their own
And everyone wants to know they're not alone
There's somebody else that feels the same somewhere
There's gotta be somebody for me out there

From there, the mp3 played the theme song from Chariots of Fire. Very cool. I then put Nickelback on repeat and drove DH nuts the rest of the time we were getting ready.
We finished getting ready and headed out to the bus. That’s always an awesome experience for us. There’s just something in the air. We’re all nervous and excited and you can just feel it. Plus, there’s that thing about it being 3:30 in the morning. ;)

Got to Epcot and found WISHers right away. That always helps to calm the nerves. Plus, it was withdisneyspirit’s first full, so I put more focus on her while trying not to think about what was lying ahead.

Then, it was time for the religious service. This is just a 5 to 10 minute service/prayer that really helps put things in perspective for me before the race. The pastor is a marathoner and he had done the service last year. He would be running the marathon too. The man is amazing. This year, the service was based on a verse in Philippians and it spoke of “pressing on.” I felt like it was spoken right to me. This was going to be my year. The year I was going to press on and not give up. I just can’t even describe how that felt.

Funny thing about the service. There was a man there that we had met on the plane to San Antonio. He had met his wife at the Great Wall of China marathon and was a 50-state club member. Oh, and he was about half way through doing the 50 states again. :O Small world.

We chatted a bit after and made our way to gear check. We met the cutest couple in line. They asked us to take a pic, as this was their first. I did and told them to enjoy it, as they would never have another first. The guy asked what it was really like. I told him I wouldn’t lie and tell him it was easy, but that it was well worth sticking it out. I told him where some of the hard parts were for me, we wished each other well and parted ways. I still wonder how they did.

It was really crowded after we crossed to port-o-pot city, so we only had time to go once and head to the start. It was chilly, but I was happy about that. Getting to the corral seemed to take forever with the way we were routed this year and we only had a few minutes to spare. As we turned the last corner to our corral, though, I about stopped dead. My HS running song was playing. A song that was played at the banquet every year for Cross Country. A song that I had not heard since fall of 1988.

Runner
by Mannfred Mann

Through the night...through the dawn,
Behind you another runner is born.
Don't look back, you've been there.
See the mist as your breath hits the air.
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some;
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum.

Through the night...through the dawn,
Behind you another runner is born.
Don't look back, you've been there.
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air.
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some;
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum.

And you will run your time, a shooting star across the sky.
And you will surely cross the line, to pass on the flame.

Sun come up...sun go down.
Hear the beat, see the sweat on the ground.
Watch your step, keep your cool,
Though you can't see what's in front of you.
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some;
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum.

And you will run your time, a shooting star across the sky.
And you will surely cross the line, to pass on the flame, pass on the flame.

Through the night...through the dawn,
Behind you another runner is born.
Don't look back, you've been there.
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air.
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some;
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum.

And you will run your time, a shooting star across the sky.
And you will surely cross the line.

And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some;
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum.

And you will run your time, a shooting star across the sky.
And you will surely cross the line.

Poor dh, I just kept walking with tears streaming down my face. Couldn’t help it. If I hadn’t already known God was with me that day, that did it for sure. (Sometimes I need a kick in the head, I know)

Saw Lily briefly, but it was too loud where we were for her to stay. We soon got out too, but lost Lily. Then, Roxy came up and introduced herself. She asked if she could pace with us, as she didn’t want to have to go alone. I said sure. Her goal was 5:30 and ours was 5:00, but I had no idea how long we’d keep pace. Plus, I knew we were going to try to start fast to do what we could before the sun came out.

Before we knew it, they were playing the national anthem. Then there were fireworks. Did anyone else think the fireworks were much better this year?

IMG_1764.jpg

So, we were off. We were at Water Stop #2 before we knew it. It was fast and crowded, but still great to see everyone.
IMG_1769.jpg

Roxanne loved the Red start with all the lights, Spaceship Earth, the crowd at the entrance to Epcot. I really like this one, too, although dh still misses blue and having more time around WS.

IMG_1771.jpg

I saw Mulan and Mushu just as we exited WS, but didn’t have time for a pic.  The course was so crowded this year. The cones between red and blue were awful, as everyone combined instantly and those just made tripping hazards. Ugh. Got better as we got back on the road and weren’t backstage any more.

I looked for my parents around mile 4 but didn’t see them. Ut oh. I was in trouble if I gave them the wrong time info. Usually, we just give them the mini brochures from the expo, but we could not find any this year. We had given up, when we saw a crowd father up than we had remembered before. Whew. I was off the hook. I love all spectators, but knowing some are there just for me is wonderful.

Wasn’t too long after that when Matt dropped back to us. Very cool. His plan was to run with his starting group until he got tired, then he would fall back to WISHers and run with them until he got tired and so on. Very fun. There were a bunch of people thanking him for being out on the half course Saturday. He is a fun cheerer, that’s for sure!

IMG_1773.jpg

I think this is when we saw Jeff. I just remember it was dark an on the stretch after 4.

We got to a bridge or 2? around mile 5. This was when the crowd was most noticeable. We were on pace, but not as much ahead as I wanted to be due to crowds. When the group hit the bridge, everyone slowed. That really stunk. I can’t say enough how I really hope Disney backs off on the numbers. It is was too hard to run or even think of having fun when it’s so crowded. This was about the tiem Matt decided to give Cheryl a status update, so it was just the 3 again. Scott and I both agree, though, that it was really nice to have Roxanne with us. If nothing else, she had sotires we hadn’t heard and we oculd tell her all of our stories that she hadn’t heard.

Just before mile 6, we hit the loupdy-loop. That’s when we hit the 5 hour pace group too. Ugh. They were great about warning us when they were going to a walk. When that many people come to a stop, though, bad traffic gets much worse. Being on a curve did not help. We used the downhill (and the grass) to get around them, though. I know the leader was trying to keep people’s minds occupied, but at mile 6, I really don’t want to think about the “negative feedback” your muscles will give you in the second 10 miles. JMO, like I said, I’m sure she was trying to help.

IMG_1776.jpg

Things started to stretch out a bit more on the road to MK. We were making decent time and I was feeling ok. Wasn’t too long before we hit the parking lots. We reminisced a bit about the first year where a guy had a “will you marry me?” sign in there. Yes Roxanne got LOTs of stories.

Then, we were at TNT . Yay! It was so great to see WISHers. WISH I had time to get pix of them all, because my memory starts to get more and more fuzzy as the race wears on. I just know it’s a huge high for me.

Then, we saw the Contemporary and BLT. Had to take pix. Knew they wouldn’t be DVCNews worthy, but it was cool to think of my DVCNews friends there.

IMG_1781.jpg

IMG_1779.jpg

Around the Contemporary hill, we met up with Claire. Yay another WISHer! This was so cool to be running as a group. (Don’t worry, only 2 wide, per the rules.) Things were going so fast for me, that I hadn’t already taken my typical 10 pix of Space Mountain approaching. Only had time for 1.

IMG_1784.jpg

Before we knew it, we were entering MK and there was my scream team. Yay!!!

IMG_1786.jpg

Main street was a blast as usual. There was a guy there cheering with a U of M shirt, so I yelled “Go Blue” and high-fived him. People look kind of surprised when I do that or Go Wings. Hey, if you’re cheering and wearing my team’s clothing, I will assume you are cheering for me too and you just have to deal with it. ;) I need all the help I can get.

IMG_1789.jpg

It’s always cool to turn the corner into Tomorrowland at this time.

IMG_1791.jpg

Saw several characters in there. Plus, they had a band out. I didn’t remember them from before.

Then, a quick pic of my favorite bear. Line was too long for me to stop. There’s Claire too!

IMG_1796.jpg

Yay they had the trumpeters at the back of the castle again this year. That is soo cool!!!

IMG_1799.jpg

Then, it was through the castle. There was even a long line for pix there. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they did get a pic of our group, though. Not one with all 4, of course, or one with dh and I, but that’s life.

As we were going over the bridge to Frontierland, we had a near miss with a duck. Poor thing was scared to death. Of course, it made the situation worse when it took off flying as we tried to step around it. Very close call!!! I can still feel the air on my face from the beating wings.

IMG_1802.jpg

Soon, it was time to leave the park again and head for the hard part. We saw Tracy at the water station just before we went out the back door, though, so that was cool.

Howard & Steve caught up with us somewhere in here, as I started to struggle. They were cruising pretty good, though, so we didn’t see them for long. Claire and Roxy went ahead for a while as I was dropping back more and more. The first half went well and we were well above pace per my Garmin, but it was starting to warm up and I was fading fast. At some point, Roxy dropped back and I told her I was glad she had Claire to run with, I could keep up the pace. She said her legs were getting tired too, though, so she needed to drop back. Lol. That lasted about 10 seconds and she was off. That girl can fly! Even funnier was Claire dropping back again saying she should have stayed with us, as she couldn’t keep up with Roxanne. Too funny. My mind is getting really fuzzy here and I can’t remember where we lost Claire again. 

We did see my scream team again on the back stretch before they headed ot breakfast at the GF. While I do get very jealous on course, they put in a long day and I’m glad they give themselves a treat.

Now, the Sharpie signs aren’t thrilling, but they do help a bit on that loooong stretch to MK. (It’s only 4 miles, but feels like 20) However, I wish they would change them around, as it seems like it’s always the same signs in the most boring parts of the course.

They did add music somewhere in this stretch this year. That was very nice. I know I heard Chariots of Fire somewhere on the course, so I’m going to say it was here. I’ve never heard that on the course before either, so that was another reminder that I was getting what I needed when I needed it.

Plus, we realized that we were going fast enough this year to have shade fo most of the back stretch. This is usually where the torture begins. So, our plan of running hard while it was cool appeared to have worked in some regard.

Finally, we were at the back door to AK. Yay!!!

IMG_1806.jpg

While the concrete really hurts my feet by that point, it’s still nice to have fun things to see.

IMG_1810.jpg

This is where the hurting really starts. Where every step starts to hurt and you still have 10 miles to go. What a treat to find Minnie with no line!!

IMG_1811.jpg

OK, so a line had formed but the time we reached her but not bad at all. The handlers are really good about taking pix for you too.

Then, it was out of the park and into the parking lot. Yay. (Insert a boatload of sarcasm) That’s where we saw lllovell and her family, though, so that was really cool!!!!! I know we saw other WISHers, please forgive me for not remembering who. I think this may be where I saw withdisneyspirit’s dh too. I know we saw him somewhere.

We saw villains just after mile 18. I was disappointed that Hook would not be on the bridge to torment this year, but you can’t win ‘em all. ;)

IMG_1813.jpg

Now, it’s time for those over passes. I must have been doing ok, as I took time to notice things around me. I hadn’t realized you could see the Dolphin from that hill. That’s the beginning of the end to me and I had remarked that when I saw it yesterday.

IMG_1816.jpg

Typically, I look at the ground when I get tired. Chi Running has helped me with this a lot, but I still fall back into my bad habits when I’m really tired. At some point, dh asked if I was practicing my Chi Running. I told him I was trying, but knew I was not doing real well. Still, was better than ever before.

Then we got to the Out & Back. Absolutely awful to know you’ve got to run a mile back the same way you just came. You pass mile 20 just before you enter, though. I joked with Scott that it’s “only” a 10K now. While people cheering would thing that would sound like nothing to a marathoner. When every step hurts, 1 mile seems pretty far. Hey were playing music at the turn-around, I think. I think this is where I heard Rocky. No way!!!! To hear it there did wonders for me.

Did the down and then up to DHS. The up went pretty darn well for me. I was hurting, but I knew we would finish. At this point, I knew we would not add any extra walk either like we had the last 2 years. Yay!!!!!! Now, maybe we could have walked faster, but it’s a principle thing for me. Plus, I know even people from FL said it was hot, but I was dealing with it better than ever. I never got the feeling that I might overhead. That is huge for me!!!

DHS was ok. It never thrills me. You always thing the costume tunnel will be cool, as it’s shaded, but the air is really stagnant. We did see Frozone and the army many was cheering, but it would take a miracle for me to enjoy this section. Then, I turned the corner for my miracle!

IMG_1817.jpg

NEVER have I seen Pooh hear before. Dh informed me that we were stopping, even if there was a line. The pick me up would outweigh the brief stop and we could stretch while in line. (It was only maybe a minute in line). Still the stretching felt good and my brief time with my imaginary friends did wonders for my spirit. While I know I still appeared to be hobbling on the outside, I was bouncing on the inside for a bit.

Then, we exited DHS and got an even better surprise. As Scott said, we went from my impaginary friends to my real friends! Of course, they all started out as my “vitual” friends. ;)

IMG_1818.jpg

Talk about blessings. Another place where no one had ever been before. I could have cried. Rhonda asked if I needed anything. Nope, we stay well stocked. Then she asked if I was OK. “I hurt everywhere, but I’m fine.” Lol, something only another runner could understand.

It was downhill and to the home stretch from there. Back to back pick-me-ups were wonderful!!! Then we hit the Boardwalk. I knew it was still a long way (yes, 2 miles is very long at this point) , but I knew we were going to finish and I knew there’d be no extra walk breaks. I was thrilled, or as thrilled as you can get at this point.

Saw my favorite WISH cheer spot that I have loved since. I love that!!!!! Then, it was off for the last tough long haul. There are a few bridges in the last stretch, that are small compared to the over passes, but large at the end of a marathon. No sticking my tongue out to get up them this year, though! Hat’s even better than 2006!

Finally, we made it to WS. 1.2 to go from France. Every step still hurt, but it was better than it’d ever been on that stretch. Didn’t seem to take years to get from country to country. Next thing I know, we were in Mexico. Woo hoo! Just around the bend, to the choir, around the bend and to the finish. OK, it felt like a bit more than that. But still, not bad. As we made the turn towards the ball, Missyha and dd were there. Yay!!!! That was another nice surprise!

The, we ran into a girl from Team in Training. Poor thing practically pleaded to us, “Where’s the finish”. I told her just around the bend was the choir and the 26 mile marker and just around the bend after that you’d see the finish. That seemed to help. We talked to her a bit. This was her first marathon. Tried to convince her she was doing great, but she was feeling rough. Of course, we made the next turn and there was no choir. Oops. Sorry. Never listen to someone who’s just run 26 miles.

Next turn and we were at the choir. Just one more turn. I kind of lost her after that because I could see my family around the last turn and then the finish. Woo hoo!!! We made it!!!!!

We saw the TnT girl after we finished and she was fine. It just takes so much out of you.

Our time was 5:26. Not what I wanted, but made my second fastest time by 20 minutes. Given the heat, I am very happy. Most importantly, though, for the first time since 2006, I know I didn’t give up on myself. I am really happy with that and thrilled to remember all the blessings I felt before, during, and after the race.

Huge thanks to all for your support on and off the course!!! (and anyone who read through my novel)

Carrie: great report, I loved the pictures!!!! Maybe I need to take my camera with me next year, having the pics may be worth the hassle of carrying it.
