Race Reports for 6/2, 3 and Encouragement/Kudos!

Congratulations Colleen! :yay: Great effort!

Good job, Colleen!

I wasn't supposed to be racing this weekend, but ended up signing up and doing a 5K at the last minute. I have not been training for a 5K; I've been upping my mileage and not my pace but I thought it was worth a try just as a gauge of my fitness level at this point compared to last year. The bad news was that by signing up at the last minute I lost out on the race shirt!

I decided to follow the advice of the Runner's World article and start off fast instead of trying to "save it" until the end. I started off feeling great and kept at it without too much effort until just before the first mile. When I got to mile one marker I was very pleased to be there in 8:05! (In training I've been running about a 9:45 pace.) I eased up at that point and just kind of cruised along. The route was nice and shady and not very crowded at all; but it did have lots of rolling hills. We had a long uphill run just before the finish; at the top of the hill we'd turn the corner and run about 500 yards before the drive leading another 100 yards or so to the finish. I decided to walk the last 20 yards up the hill to catch my breath so I could really kick it in, promising myself that I'd pass all those who passed me while I was walking. I accomplished that and then really kicked in into high gear for the last 200 yards. I passed one woman who yelled "holy ****" and heard her coming with me. I set my sights on another ahead of me. I caught her and she stuck to my shoulder and we fought it out to the end. I'd love to say I won, but I have to admit it was a photo finish and without said photo who knows? (Our chip times came out exactly the same, but since I'm 15 years older than her I feel like I won anyway!) I finished with a PR of 27:12 with which I was very happy! I know now that if I trained for a 5K I could easily break 27. Maybe next year; I'm going to keep trying to extend my mileage to get ready for Mickey instead!

Renee - Great job on the 5K PR:banana: !! Especially considering it was a spur of the moment venture.

Wahoooooo! You were smokin', Colleen!!!!! Good for you! That is an amazing job in the hills!

Hope your achilles responds well to rest, icing, and some gentle stretching -- and the anti-inflamatory of your choice.

Renee - Awesome job on the 5K! Too bad you didn't get the t-shirt, but great that you were able to PR on a last minute decision.

Renee, great 5K (hey, that rhymes). Excellent effort. I salute your decision to enter at the last moment (I can't bring myself to enter a race unless I'm guaranteed the T-shirt!)
