Quirks with FP+ and tips/tricks to get around them

We went for 5 days at WDW in June and I was just thinking about some..interesting things I saw when booking and using FP+.

For example, we had a pretty big party of 6 and after we used our initial 3 FP+ booking additionals didn't always provide a good time for the rides we wanted. However, picking and re-picking different specific times within MDE seemed to pull up more times each try. I'm not sure if this was just the app or if other people were cancelling and opening up more spots for us. But trying 5-10 times seemed to get us what we needed.

I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences and solutions to share.

Trying 5-10 times to schedule a ride time is not my idea of how I'd like to spend time at Disney.
