Last night I realized my amex payment was due on the 21st. I quickly payed it online. Is there usually a late fee right away or a grace period before it is applied? Thanks.
If they didn't have your payment by the due date then it is considered to be late. There will be late fees and interest to be paid. Sometimes you can get a late fee waved if you have a good payment record but they almost never wave the interest.
I've done this many times, and trust me, there is no grace period! However, if you haven't asked for it to be waived recently (usually 6 months), they will usually waive it if you call.
and what I did is I called them up ASAP to make a payment over the phone. Amex doesn't charge a fee to do this and also explain what happened. It was the Costco Amex that we've had for years. Waived the fee (think it was $35) and then told me to watch the bill since they couldn't reverse the finance charge then but would if it did hit the bill. Since it was a "first time offense" all was good. Now I just call in the bill either when I think the bill will be printed or right when I receive it in hand instead of waiting till due date since I'm not really getting any interest in checking account.
Don't want to have it affect my credit rating and I was "trained" by parents to never buy what I can't afford to pay when the bill hits.
