Questions for early Alaskan cruisers!

when I inquired about the free bag with Delta and I used my gold card with booking the flights...they told me that the free bag is only for travel in the US. This was international and you get a free bag going to Canada without the gold card.

According to the Delta website, active duty on orders to or from duty stations are exempt from all baggage fees. Active duty going on vacation not in conjunction with orders would therefore not qualify. That was on the Baggage section of the Travel Information area and is consistent with what I've heard from friends who are still on active duty.

The problem is that they use the words 'travel orders' which is slightly ambiguous. The military travel desk at delta claimed he *could* take bags for free -- 'it's on the website' the guy told me, after I had explained that he has a LEAVE form. Two representatives also told me via email that he could take bags, one other rep on the phone told me, and then two reps and one person via email told me he COULDN'T. Very frustrating. And in the end, I guess we won't know for sure until we show up. This contrasts sharply with our experience w other airlines, such as airtran, who don't care about orders, just whether you are active duty.

Did anyone fly Continental operating through Air Canada? I booked through the Continental website, but it says its an Air Canada flight.

The reason I ask is because the last time I checked Air Canada didn't charge for a first checked bag, but Continental does charge. It won't be a huge deal if we each need to pay for one bag roundtrip, but I was curious.

We used continental FF miles - DH and DS are flying with Air Canada and me and DD are flying with United. From what I understand you are under the rules of the airline you are flying with not the one you booked with. We have Continenal, Air Canada and United confirmation #s, confusing yes.

I am confused - I booked Delta for our flight from STL to Seattle but it is an Alaska flight. Who's luggage policy applies to our trip?

We booked through Continental on the flight that Air Canada operates. On the flights to/from Vancouver, you don't get charged for the first bag.

Question??????

Anyone have good ideas or used something that worked well for storing baggage before of after cruise?

Hoping to do Grouse Mountain after cruise and then heading to airport for a 5pm flight. Need idea for our luggage. Thanks.

I can't remember where I read it but it was on the boards that the port will store them for $6 a bag.

I've never heard of leave papers being considered to be "orders" in this context. If Delta has allowed that, then I think those people were lucky. (At least in terms of what their intent is by stating "on travel orders".) I'm not stating an opinion on whether or not they should expand it to all active duty as other airlines have - but I've run into many people (at Disney, airlines, any-place-that-gives-a-military-discount for having military ID or orders) who don't really know what is included/legit and what is not - so any official-looking document with a military name on it suffices for whoever's looking at them. My guess is that's why the people you are talking to are giving mixed answers.

Can you please post another question:

Is there an Alaska scrapbook and refill kit for sale in the gift shop? Disney had one specially made for the Baltic and now that I have been bitten by the scrapbooking bug, I am hoping they have one for Alaska, too.

Thanks for this great thread and for all you early cruiser's help in helping us plan this wonderful trip. Bon Voyage!

Yes they do have an Alaska scrapbook and refill kit in the gift shop, however, they didn't put them out the 1st couple of days.

We went the week of May 3rd - 11th. It was 42 -54 degrees on deck. The pools were at 89!

Actually I got the Alaska cruise scrapbook paper pack on the first night after first seating dinner. I bought the last 2 they had out and there weren't anymore until day 3 I think. On day 4 the album appeared. The album has paper in it. A few are duplicates of the pack, a few different and a couple are same print but different color from the pack. The pack does have a few papers that are not in the album and a lot of nice stickers. I do double page layouts so I bought two paper packs. I also bought a nice pack for pirate pirate: scrapbooking, I really like it, but wish I had bought a second one and I bought the pack for Disney cruising. Only some of it can I use now...the rest will go to scrap Hawaii cruise next year because it has too tropical a tone for some Alaska photos :). I was really pleased and surprised at the amount of scrapbooking supplies available...a lot more than I found at Disneyland last time. I will definitely use it all with my 600+ photos from the week:rolleyes:

A couple questions that I haven't noticed here after a quick search....

1. The navigators for the inagural Alaskan cruise shows that Golden Mickeys was shown on both the 1st Sea Day and the Tracy Arm Day (two nights back-to-back). Is that happening on the subsequent cruises, too?

2. Is the dining rotation Tritons-Animators-Parrot or Tritons-Parrot-Animators?

Thanks.

Actually, The Golden Mickeys was *scheduled* for the first Sea Day on the Inaugural cruise, but had to be canceled because of the rough seas (since they had to take the outside passage West of Vancouver Island). So it was re-scheduled for the next night (Tracy Arm day).

Sayhello

On the first cruise they were out the first day but many folks bought them. For awhile they were on e-bay until the ebay sellers realized that DCL had a lot of them!

I was very happy to read this, but then I hopped over to Delta's website and it looks like this conflicts with the info they have on their site. I hope what they told you is true, but it doesn't look like they include Canada with their international travel rules. This is taken from Delta's website:

Checked Baggage Guidelines

For travel within or between the United States and Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico:

•First checked bag: $23 USD/CAD* if checked in online or $25 USD/CAD* at the airport kiosk, ticket counter or curbside
•Second checked bag: $32 USD/CAD* online or $35 USD/CAD* at the airport

Has anyone that has already made the trip confirm if they charge on a direct flight from the US to Vancouver?

I sent a customer inquiry and that was their response.
I am going to see if I can find the email

I will get back to you
