Questions for early Alaskan cruisers!

Thanks so much for the reply. I was thinking about wearing capris and a nice top, but then I wasn't sure since Alaska can be cold. Glad to hear that it worked out well for you. :goodvibes

Short sleeves or long? I always wear short sleeves on the Caribbean cruises, but do I need long sleeves for this one? My dress for Palo is short sleeved. Will I be cold? Just wondering what temperature the dining rooms are.

I always take a sweater and sweatshirt when I cruise, doesn't matter what time of year, you never know how cold the dining rooms and the theaters will be.

Alaska cruisers have been asked to not wear jeans to dinner.

From an email I received today:
"Nice dining attire (no jeans or shorts at dinner, please)"

That is odd because their website clearly states otherwise.... also first hand info from early AK cruisers state many folks are wearing jeans.... I think I would chalk this email up to an error....

Hmmm....was the email from Disney? I have no problem not wearing jeans but it will be interesting to see how many people follow that request.

we were on the Repo to Canada and there were many, us included, who wore jeans. There was no problem at all. We have never worn jeans but our luggage wasn't in our room before dinner the first night so we had no other choice. Also on pirate night we wore jeans with our pirate t-shirts....
so :confused3

Yes, it was an email from Disney Cruise Line entitled "Final Reminders Before Your Disney Cruise."

I know the jeans issue can be a hot topic and I'm not suggesting whether or not anyone should wear them, I'm simply reporting that it appears those on the Alaska cruises are asked not to wear them to dinner. I had read that being the case from previous posts here on these boards so I wasn't surprised to see it in the email.

Good to know. We haven't received that email, although I have no problem following any dress code. I was surprised that there was really no mention of that in our cruise docs. How far before your cruise date did you receive the email???:confused3

I received this as well and it was specific for nice dress at dinner and excluded jeans. My take has always been that if you are comfortable complying, it adds a level of specialness to dinner. If wearing khakis is a huge problem for whatever reason, then so be it. I think it is polite to comply, but I would rather you be worried about having fun, relaxing, and family than what to wear.

Well I'm glad we cruised Alaska before they started saying that! LOL
Seriously though all the other cruises we haven't even BROUGHT jeans- let alone wore them (warmer destinations) but this time there were TONS of jeans being worn to dinner. I didn't see anyone in crappy torn up jeans with holes or anything like that- but I did see a lot of jeans on that cruise!

(and yes once again saw men in docker shorts and had to hear about it from my husband and I just told him same thing I say often to the kids... just because someone else does wrong doesn't mean you should LOL)

I highly doubt they'll say anything if jeans are worn.... and I'm surprised they are asking them to not be worn in a colder enviroment. Most kids, especially teens, mostly wear jeans in colder weather. I understand dressing in slacks or dresses for formal/semi-formal nights but every night? Ugh- that wouldn't make for very happy teens every night- at least not in my family. I'd really have a hard time getting them to dinner then! LOL

I received mine today...we cruise 2 weeks from today! I understand where DCL is coming but we live in a denim society. I don't think I'm going to be able to get my dh to go out and buy some additional Dockers for this cruise:confused3

So it's coming late in the game. Good to have some advance notice, since I don't think my DH was planning on packing more than one pair of dress pants. I guess I don't really mind the no jeans policy (not so sure about how DH will feel, though), but it's good to know well in advance of our packing... Maybe (because of the cold) there were more jeans being worn in the dining rooms and that caused them to send out the email. I didn't even bring jeans with me when we cruised out of FL. ;)

Lovely!! Did you find that you needed lighter clothing for daytime? I'm a little concerned about DSl suggestion of shorts for daytime. Any input would be greatly appreciated:-)

I would never wear jeans for dinner but plan to pack them for day excursions. Did you even see people in shorts as DSL has suggested?

Just got back from the May 10-17 Alaskan cruise.

As you can see, the Alaskan panhandle in May is a cold, inhospitable place.
The air was so frigid that children-shaped icebergs formed in the pools:

(One thing worth noting: they do *not* play movies on the Funnel Vision when docked in port due to Alaskan laws regarding noise pollution).

:rotfl: It's great to see that the kids had fun in the pool -- even in cold Alaska! Thanks for sharing the photo -- I hope you had a wonderful cruise. :goodvibes

Heh... it wasn't actually that cold. That particular day was shorts and t-shirt weather. There would have been more adults in the pool, but I think the kids scared them away! (And thanks... it was a wonderful cruise!)

Some other answers (I apologize if these have already been answered as I only briefly skimmed the thread).

1. There is a hot chocolate machine at the beverage station:

2. They do put out blankets (the blankets are about the same as you'd get in an airplane):

3. They sell all sorts of Alaskan-themed Disney merchandise:

4. They had a decent selection of beer from the Alaskan Brewing Company, which is quite decent beer. (We bought our own cases of the Summer Ale while in Skagway and carried it onboard the ship).

On tap we had Shock Top (Belgian White), Michelob AmberBock (I think--in any case, it was a dark bock-style beer from one of the mega-breweries), and of course the usual, tasteless, "mass appeal" stuff.

In addition to the Alaskan Brewing Company selections, the bottled beer they had included Guinness, Sam Adams, Newcastle, Bass (I think), and again the usual fizzy yellow water for people who don't like their beer to have any taste (bud light, bud, stella, corona, etc.)

There was probably more selections than what I've indicated here, but these are what I observed.

I didn't see many people in shorts. I saw women in capris though- with jackets and looking likey were freezing to death. LOL
Honestly- the excursions is where it was warmer-- on land. On the ship, and especially when it was moving was brrrrrrrrrrrrr LOL
