Questions for early Alaskan cruisers!

OOOH! -- I love a good tangent! How are you liking the 70-300? Is it a push/pull zoom?

Did you find that you were generally having adequate light without having to crank the ISO or were you forced to make compromises due to light levels?

Thanks for your thoughts!

i find the new 70-300 a vast improvement over the old non L, and mind you i took that one to europe on the 1st med cruise and got some great photos, it is not a push/pull, but does extend during zooming
most of the time i shot at iso 100, f8 and just shot away, onc in awhile if it got grey, i went to iso 200, had to tweak the exposure in lightroom on maybe 6-10 total

Question for early cruisers: Is Diversions still open to all ages in the early afternoon?

That area of the ship is open to all ages until 9:00 when it becomes an 18+ area.

Went into the HD store in Skagway (all the way up the street on the left) and saw the store in Juneau. Not sure about Ketchikan. Make sure you bring beaucoup bucks. NOTHING in the Skagway store was on sale.

Thanks!

all 3 hd stores are within easy walk, no sale items, T's are $30, but they are pretty unique graphics
hd in skagway is straight up broadway, if i remember correctly corner broadway & 7th

juneau, turn left, it's half block past red dog saloon

ketchikan, 2nd floor of the miners store, hd logo is on the building, it's right on the corner of the street where busses turn left for the lumberjack show, maybe 1 short block away from show back towards docks

we did excursions in all 3 ports and still had time even with lumberjack show in ketchikan to get the T shirt trifecta, one from each

lighthouses eagles and totems, juneau, excellent tour, plenty of eagles and nests, 1 interesting island lighthouse, totems at totem bight state park, this is a boat tour. nice snacks, restrooms (2) on the boat, 2 decks to view from, although upper deck is best if nice day

Did they offer a "bundle" of shirts, one from each store in alaska? They did that a few years ago when we were there.
Thanks

Yet another question for early AK DCL cruisers:

What do people wear to dinner (the casual nights)? I just realized that my nice "casual dining" clothes are mostly tropical and meant for warmer weather... now that I have to rethink things it would be great to hear what others have done.

Saw lots of jeans, dress pants, spring dresses (not summer!)...I still dressed for the season like at home which is Illinois...I wore white capris and nicer tops...I also saw shorts on casual nights which didn't seem that out of place. I wore nicer jeans a few nights with fancier tops...dh wore jeans with polos or dress shirts...he wore a sports jacket one night. It was pretty much anything goes on casual nights...

I belive they had the regular wine tasting, but they also had some "seminars" that featured particular vineyards where you tasted their products and learned about the vineyard. My parents went to one for Chappellet (sp?) and loved the wines!

I really want to be at port early, but not to torture my family. I'm interested in getting a low boarding number so I can "fix" our Palo brunch problems. I'd planned to arrive at 10, but forcing my kids and parents to "stand in a line" for an hour seems like a poor choice. None of us mind waiting "in port," but I don't want to force my family to stand in a long, non-moving line.

Does anyone have suggestions for when we should arrive? Also, do you turn over the big bags after customs, or before?

Thanks SO much

Lollipops Mom got there today around 10:45 and said there was a long line and they opened customs at 11 but the line was moving fast.

I just booked the "DCL exclusive" Lumberjack show through their website. It saved us 37.50 since we could book our DD12 as a child instead of an adult. I was surprised it would let us do it, but it did. You had no problems picking up the tickets though?

Where on the website is the link for "DCL exclusive?" I can't seem to find it.
:confused3

Thanks for the help

I clicked on the "buy tickets", went to te day I wanted and clicked on the 4:15 show. That is the DCL one. I believe it says there that it's DCL Exclusive

Short sleeves or long? I always wear short sleeves on the Caribbean cruises, but do I need long sleeves for this one? My dress for Palo is short sleeved. Will I be cold? Just wondering what temperature the dining rooms are.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was thinking about wearing capris and a nice top, but then I wasn't sure since Alaska can be cold. Glad to hear that it worked out well for you. :goodvibes

Did people tend to dress up on Formal night (I didn't see a semi formal night in the Navigators - did I miss it?) The last few cruises, less and less people seem to be very formal (tux and gown). It was more like suit and cocktail dress. Not sure if it's worth packing a gown or DH renting a tux.

What is the difference between the DCL Exclusive Lumberjack show and the regular show?

DCL has allowed jeans in the dining rooms for a few years now, so it's definately the norm.
