I used the word "conservative" in response to the very first person who posted, Zippa D Doodah, who told me Rush was a "conservative spokesman". This isn't an US vs Them discussion.

Sorry, I realize now I meant to type that the word conservative was used. I knew not by you. I guess I just think that anytime a thread about someone (liberal or conservative) who is a well known political personality comes up, it will turn political. And sadly an us vs. you kind of thing. It simply cannot be avoided.

You sound exactly like me. Opposite sides of the same coin so to speak! I don't listen to talk radio because I only listen to the radio when I drive and whether its Rush or someone on the left, its too distracting and irritating! I have read some of Josh Marshall's blog, he makes valid points. I'd much rather hear what someone like him has to say than someone who just has to use shock value to get his/her point across.

In my opinion, you can be an entertainer without being a comedian. That's all that I mean...again, in my opinion. I do not believe that certain people mean to be taken seriously...Rush expects people to take him seriously.

I sincerely wish there were more days like this too. I have been guilty of name calling myself. There are some...not all...Liberal DISers that name call frequently. Personally, I am sick of it and I am trying to stop doing it myself, but my passion takes over.

Well, see, that was the whole point of this thread. If you go back to the original post, I asked what Rush Limbaugh's purpose was. Now, thanks to this thread, I understand his (sole) purpose is to provide political commentary. However, just because he is a political pundit, per se, doesn't mean that the thread itself has to become political, does it? Just because Rush is apparently a conservative, that doesn't mean that anyone needs to discuss the liberal television and radio personalities. I am not asking questions about them. I am asking questions about Rush. I don't care if there are more outrageous conservative or liberal personalities, I just wanted more info about Rush. Specifically, I wondered who employed him. Now I know the answer.

YOU brought up Chappelle- who has no political value. So I made my post based on your comparisons. A comedian using shock for laughs is very different that a so-called political commentator using it for ratings.

As has been mentioned ad nauseum, Rush is not entirely political. He also does humor. It was a post about using stereotypes for humor!! The poster I quoted seemed to have a problem with it when Rush did it. I was curious if the poster had a problem with the same type of humor done by others. Chappelle was just an example. Both have the exact same goal, to get and keep people watching/listening/buying, ie, ratings!

My apologies if that is too difficult to comprehend.

I tried listening to Hannity on the radio the other day - but he was wailing how Obama is a socialist. I said - I'm out of here.

Then I turned on Randi Rhodes - who's been wailing about torture. So I tuned out there - I know torture is bad Randi - no need to have 5 hour debates on the topic (apparently a conservative 15 year old had just called in to say torture should be an acceptable tool for the US).

So I switched to the news........

I was listening to Hannity a couple of months ago. He was going on and on about how Obama was going to ruin talk radio and all of these people were calling in crying about Obama taking conservative talk radio away and socialist this, communist that. It angered me because I know Hannity knows that even if the Fairness Doctrine was re instituted, it wouldn't affect their programming. He does not want his audience knowing the truth, he just wants them angry. I think this sort of "entertainment" does nothing but divide the country even more.

I have seen conservatives here post in defense of what he says, I have seen some say things along the line of "get off my side". I have seen some posters here defend Ann COulter even when she says racist things, I have seen other conservatives be disgusted by her comments. To me it is not all or none. But some of the more vocal and aggresive conservative posters are clear about their love of their "blowhards". In terms of abrasive liberal blowhards, I think of Randi Rhodes....and if a liberal has stated their love of her word, I have not seen it.

But in terms of liberals not being considered followers of blowhards.....frankly talk radio is more of a conservative thing. It has not really caught on in the liberal market. Even in the liberal area that I live in I can dial down the radio and fined one liberal station...liberal talk shows, etc.....yet in my liberal area I can find probably 4 or five that have a strong conservative side.

I agree that liberal talk radio has never, to my knowledge, caught on. We used to have one AM station here in Fort Worth that had a radio show by a very liberal local personality (Bob Ray Sanders). I listened a couple of times, but it just did not grab me; I would always end up listening to Rush.

I guess that Conservative outrage is simply more entertaining to listen to. Bob Ray would talk about how we need to help the less fortunate. Ok, great. But hardly a topic that makes you want to rush out to your car each day and tune in.

Ah, but 10 minutes with Rush? You can feel your heart start pumpin'; you can feel outrage: either against Rush, or with Rush against liberals. No mealy-mouth love fest with Rush!
