Questions about resales and add-ons...

DH and I bought DVC membership in '99 @ BWV. We were conservative in our points purchase b/c we weren't sure with 2 small ones and a 3rd on the way that we could manage to go on a vacation every year (especially since so much of our vacation times is already allocated to the "world tour of peace" to see his and my extended family!) We recently just enjoyed a 10 day stay at VWL, however, and brought extended family with us and the trip went very, very well. We now find ourselves in the situation of wishing we had just a few more points to work with.....

So my question is this -- how many of you folks have purchased add-ons, and did you do it through DVC, or a resale? If you did add-ons both ways, which route was the better deal? Alternatively, what about just purchasing ("renting") points as we need them from another DVC member? Does this totally mess up your ability to make reservations? Our use-year is June... it would be nice to stay in same use-year, for convenience!

After some calculating, I figure we could get use of about a 50 pt add-on, if it helps to know what I'm looking for, pt wise. What would that look like, $$$ wise?

Any help appreciated...

Cindy, renting pts on the Rent/Trade is a possibility, too. At $9 a pt you could rent for about $450 per year. I have done add-ons thru resale and Disney. Disney is, of course, the easiest and least painful method, but it's expensive. We needed to finance the add-on, though, so that was pretty much our only choice. We paid $75 a pt, but I think it's $80 now. Resales are cheaper, but much more frustrating, and take longer till you can make ressies with the pts. Resales are going for about $68 a pt now, and you will need to add about $400 to that cost for closing on a resale. Most resales don't have financing available, although Timeshare Store can finance for up to 5 years. If you go resale, be careful that you aren't buying "nothing". Many timeshares are being offered now with no pts available till next year or even the year after that, so you will have to wait to get just what you want. At Disney you have to get the same use year as your contract, but resales can be any use year.;)

Good afternoon,

I just wanted to note a common misconception. Anyone can finance a resale, with good credit, through TAMMAC financial.

TAMMAC is the organization TSS uses, I use and I'm sure the other brokers use as well. I think one of the reasons people have assumed financing wasn't available through resale is because it is unsecured. TAMMAC finances anyone with good credit and it is similar to a credit card. In addition, their current best rate is 11.5% for 5 years, which most of us can beat with our own credit cards with today's rates.

So, if you ever want to buy ANY timeshare, from ANY resale broker, TAMMAC is where you can go to get it financed. Their website is:
http://www.tammac.com

As for your question. Disney will sell you only the current property in your current use year, at the current price. Resale owners tend to know they have to beat Disney direct even with closing costs, so always make an offer. However, add-ons via resale are in low supply and high demand...typically selling the same day they become available, and of course, the use years vary. I've had multiple clients combine use years without problems, while others don't care for it. The biggest difference is two member ID cards and two banking dates. If you tend to use all your points, the banking won't be an issue.

Hope this might help in your decision making!

Kind regards,
Shontell
