Say I buy 160 (minimum from Disney) points....

1. I can borrow from next year for this year...but is there a limit as to how long you can bank...can we go 3 years without a trip and save up all 3 years of 160 + borrow from the fourth year for travel in the third?

2. Will the points per room/week stay the same for the life of the deed? Or can I expect a 2 BR to go for 240 points now (just estimating) and in 10 years it will cost me 400 points?

3. Is this new incentive for AKL a good deal? I know that's subjective, but I'm more comparing it to previous deals they have offered....

We're about to jump in...just need to understand it a bit more...my rep at Disney is off weekends! :)

Thanks!

1. You can use up to three years worth of points. Except in a very specific situation where your trip falls over two use years. For example, I have a Sept UY. If I took a trip from Aug 28, 2008 to Sept 7, 2008, I could borrow from my 2008 UY for the first couple of days and from the 2009 UY for the last few days.

2. Points stay relatively the same for the resort. They do have the option of reallocating the points, but the total number of points available for a resort must stay exactly the same. For example, if a week at OKW costs 200 points in a one bedroom, you can expect to use 200 points every year - except for Easter which moves around. They could decide to lower points on the weekend, but they would have to raise them during the week. Or raise the points on a studio, but lower them on a one bedroom.

3. Incentives change. This one is as good as the others.

You can bank one year forward and borrow one year back so except for your first trip which you would have to take in year two, you could go every three years after that.

What you describe won't happen. This is the best thing about DVC. As costs for rooms increase, point costs for rooms at DVC stay essentially the same. A reallocation could occur but they would have to decrease something in order to increase something else. So if your 2BR that now goes for 240 points were to become 242 points, something else would have to go down by 2 points to offset the change.

Deb & Bill's answer is right on target.

You can bank points into the next year. They must be used by the end of that year then.

You may borrow points from your upcoming use year, to use in the current use year.

So, you could use 3 years worth of point at a time by using banked, current, and borrowed use year points combined.

Please note that once you bank or borrow your points, you cannot change your mind and un-bank or un-borrow. So, bank and borrow wisely.

Also, note that you do not have to bank or borrow all of your points, you can bank or borrow only the exact number of points that you need (given the number that your bought, of course).

Hope this helps.

Thank you all! So do you find that you are able to use all your points or do you lose a few here or there every year or so? I guess I'm trying to find if it would be better for us to buy a used 100 point contract or buy the 160 at AKL...most of the places we'd want to stay are 200 points but we go every 2 years....so I guess if I get the 160 to keep from losing points I either use it for a bigger 2 BR or 3 BR to keep from losing the points...we just don't have that much "time" to go every year...hard to find folks to feed/take care of our animals...but we like a full 7 day trip every 2 years and when the kids are out of the house we'd probably take more short weekend trips for just the two of us....

I just didn't want to get more than we will use...but if I can't bank them more than 3 years I might want to get the 160 so we can have more options when we have grandkids 20 years down the road! So much to decide! :)

You can only bank points into the NEXT use year. Once you have banked '06 points, for instance, they must be used within the '07 use year (or deposited during the '07 use year for a trade into II within a specified period), or they expire. You can often find decent prices on a resale, but the smaller ones (including 100 pointers) seem to sell pretty quickly. If you only need 200 points every 2 years, a 160 point contract might frustrate you - and cost you more than necessary.

Just to make sure you understand the bank/borrow thing.

Let's pretend we have 100 pts, using future dates:

Do not confuse calendar year with use year renewal, that is a common confusion. If your use year is June, then every June 1 you get new points to use by the next June 1.

Using 2010, 2011, and 2012 use year points.

Bank 2010 into 2011, borrow 2012 into 2011. We now have 300 points with which we must use for a trip between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012.

The next date that we would be able to get any more points would be June 1 of 2012, but we would have to borrow the points from 2013 use year to do it. Otherwise, we must wait until June of 2013.

So if we used banking and borrowing in the same pattern each time, we could take a trip in use years 2011, 2014, 2017, etc...
