Questions about buying resale with different use year

Hi! I'm considering buying a resale contract with a different use year from my direct points and I want to make sure I know what I'm getting myself into, plus I'm a little worried about future eligibility for direct member benefits (I'm currently DVC-Y).

My understanding is that:

• I'll have a separate membership number for these resale points
• I can manage both use years using the same DVC login, but can't make reservations mixing points from the different contracts
• Once per year I can transfer points between the two contracts but they keep their original use year and resale status
• I stay DVC-Y

Is that all correct?

Also, I'm pretty sure I retain the DVC merch/dining discounts and lounge access regardless of whether I'm staying on my resale points or not (because I get them now even when I'm not staying on property!). But what about things that require you to be staying on points? Am I still eligible even if booked on my resale points? Example from the Lilo and Stitch showing recently: "Disney Vacation Club Members who are eligible for Membership Extras benefits with a qualifying Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa hotel reservation on the event date, booked by using your eligible Membership."

I think you have everything right, except if you are staying under the non direct membership, you will be excluded from some stuff. I can't remember exactly what the situation was, but someone recently posted that they couldn't do something because they were booked from a resale membership, even though they have a DVC-Y membership. The Lilo and Stitch example sounds like an exclusion. Hopefully, whoever had the issue recently will see this post and explain the situation.

I would highly advise against this.

Unless you are using the different UY contracts to book separate reservations during different times of year and/or using them every other year, I wouldn't get a different UY.

What home resort are you trying to get in a different use year?

If it's something rarer like an Aulani subsidized contract or something that will pretty much never be used with something else like VGC or BCV then that might be okay, anything else though like an AKV or SSR absolutely should not be in a different use year.

We do have different memberships, but we use them for different trips or for split stays.

If you want to regularly combine points at 7 months, it gets tricky and I wouldn’t advise unless it makes sense to have it.

Multiple UYs will certainly work - many do it. But it adds a level of complexity that we've avoided by buying the same UY - much simpler keeping track of points used, borrowed, banked, and planned for future trips.

General recommendation - avoid two different (or more) use years unless each membership can stand alone (most of the time). I have two, but each has enough points and it's own purpose that I rarely have to call MS to do anything with them. I will likely have to do so for the first time in a few weeks for an upcoming stay but that's the exception not the rule.

For now they allow you to violate the one transfer rule for your own memberships but that's at the grace of the mouse and the mouse giveth and the mouse taketh away...... I would not setup my long term strategy on something that technically breaks the rules.

This actually changed recently and members are back to one transfer with the addition of transferring banked/borrowed points so it's an excellent point that you shouldn't set your strategy up expecting it!

A few things--

I have multiple UY. It all works fine here. But I think a lot of it comes down to lifestyle options.

Here's what I've got--

You will have two waitlist spots for each UY. So two UY = four waitlist spots.

I would recommend against this if the add-on contract is so small (like 50 points) that you can't make a complete trip with it. But if you have about 150+ in each UY, you're probably fine.

If you're the type of member that tends to borrow, rather than bank points, you'll probably be fine with multiple UYs. However, if your the type of member who tends to bank, rather than borrow, you might find multiple UYs a little more tricky. (Side note, after the pandemic closures and the pandemic temporary banking rules, I've come to believe that it's far better to borrow than bank.)

If you're the type of member who makes multiple trips each year to a DVC resort, I'd say this plan has a lot better chance of working out. If you're the type of member who visits once every year (or every other year), you might be in a better place with one UY.
