Questions about availability

Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing DVC. I would like to know if anyone has ever had trouble getting the dates they want. For instance, this year I wanted to rent points for a 1 bedroom at Boardwalk or Beachclub for December and they were already all booked. Have you ever just not gotten ANYTHING for the dates you want to go?

Also, has anyone gone to the other places, such as Mandarin Washington DC or the ski resorts? Are the rooms there nice? Do you think the point exchange is fair?

This is why many believe in the "buy where you want to stay". It all depends on when you travel & where you like to stay.

DVC's popular times are not necessarily WDW most crowded times (ealy Dec., Food & Wine, etc.) & that is why the 11 month booking window can be important (especially at the smaller DVC's).

I've never not been able to get anything at all for a specific week but it wouldn't surprise me if others had particularly if a). you didn't book right at 11 or 7 months or b). it was a holiday or other notoriously busy DVC time.

I used to be able to find dates pretty easily but I'm finding it more and more difficult to find openings,especially Hilton Head in the summer. My kids are teenagers who play school sports with practice dates in the summer whose dates are not released until April. I tried today and could not get any five days in Hilton Head for the summer. It's hard when committments prohibit you from planning 11 months ahead. With older kids we can never plan that far out.

We always book at the eleven mark month, but a few years ago there was a gentleman who closed on his resale in the fall and really wanted a DVC room for the first two weeks in December. This was before SSR opened (and I think before it was even announced). Nothing was available on property for that time period and he was quite upset. As I recall, he ended up at the Contemporary on points, as his contract was sold "loaded" and he had points that were going to go to waste anyway.

Sometime in the 60-90 day window, availability can get very tight.
