Question regarding use year

Can someone help me understand reserving in my use year. Right now we have a contract with February use year and we usually travel in May and I haven't had any trouble booking our vacations in May. I am pondering purchasing a resale with a December use year. My understanding is that the points will not become available until December of let's say 2004. If the points become available in December, does that mean that I will have until November of 2005 to use these points?

December is the most confusing month to have a use year in. If the points become available in December of 2004, you can use them starting in December of 2004 through November of 2005. Unless you borrow them and then you could use them right now.

Remember that use year has nothing to do with when you can make a reservation. You can always make a reservation 11 months in advance at your home resort, regardless of use year.

Thank you. I think I have a mental block regarding these use years. I always think that I have to wait for my points before making the reservation. So, if I wanted to make a reservation for next year using the December 2004 points, I could phone now for a May date, correct? I would just have to tell them that I want to bank my 2004 into 2005?

You can phone now but no banking is necessary for May of 2005.

Your December 2004 points are good from December 1, 2004 through November 30, 2005. Any reservations made for within that period can be made with the December 2004 points. If you bank them into 2005, they wouldn't be available until December of 2005.

Don't confuse Use Year with Calendar year. They are totally separate things.

Calendar Year 2005 goes Jan 1, 2005 through Dec 31, 2005 as you know. However use years are different. A vacation in calendar May 2005 could use points from EITHER your 2005 Feb use year, OR your 2004 Dec use year.

Make yourself a use year chart. A December UY would look like this:

2008.....Dec 1, 2008 through Nov 30, 2009


Your February use year looks like this:

2005.....Feb 1, 2005 through Jan 31, 2006
2006.....Feb 1, 2006 through Jan 31, 2007
2007.....Feb 1, 2007 through Jan 31, 2008
2008.....Feb 1, 2008 through Jan 31, 2009

and so on.

If you wanted to take a vacation in May of 2005, you would use points from either your 2004 Dec use year, or your 2005 Feb use year.

If you bank points from one year to the next, they go to the next line on the chart. If you banked your 2004 Dec UY points they would go into 2005 UY which means they could only be used for a vacation between Dec 1, 2005 and Nov 30, 2006. For a May 2005 vacation you use your regular Dec 2004 UY points.

You make your reservations up to 11/7 months prior to your check-out date. For example you could make an 11-month reservation today for a May 2005 vacation, using points from either your Dec 2004 UY or your Feb 2005 UY. For a 7-month reservation for May, you would have to wait until October before you could make the reservation.
