We are thinking of just taking a small duffel bag for our upcoming trip, its a quick weekend trip.

I understand it must be travel sized items, and fit into a quart zip baggie that will zip.

Question- will DH be allowed to bring his razor? It's a Gillette with the cartridges.

Followup question- solid deordorant ok or not ok so I don't have to worry about the size?? He also has a solid stick, Old Spice deodorant.

Our flight leaves so early, if we can just bypass checking luggage, I think that would help at 4am.

Each liquid or gel item within your 1 QT ziplock bag can be no bigger than 3.4oz (100ml).

also, be aware that TSA agents frequently try to take away stick deoderant unless it is travel size (3.4oz or less.)

Print a copy of the TSA pages that state the things that are allowed and have it in your hand with your ticket. (lip balm, lipstick and solid deodorant are commonly taken yet are allowed.)

Most regular sized deodorants (stuck, gel, liquid) can go on your 311 bag. No need to buy travel sizes. Also no need for a print out of what is allowed in a 311 bag.

OP, why not check the source; the TSA website?

bolding is mine...

I was just going to say what lost in cyberspace said!! most regular sized deodorants aren't that big...esp the solid ones. they are usually somewhere around 2 to 2 1/2 ozs. But they still need to go in your 3-1-1 bag even though they are considered a 'solid'. make your like easier... ;)

Solid deodorants do not have to go in your 3-1-1 bag. Gel deodorants do, though.

Well I have been told multiple times at BWI to put them in my 3-1-1. So rather than print out a letter and HOLD EVERYONE behind me up and cause a HUGE issue.... I will just stick it in my 3-1-1 bag when I am going thru BWI! :thumbsup2 Thanks! Much easier than having issues with them! I have found them to be VERY Polite and helpful towards me if I do what they ask and quite frankly I don't think sticking a deodorant stick in the 3-1-1 bag is that huge of a deal if it gets me thru security faster. works better for me... but thanks for sharing!

Wow...touchy subject??

We have never put our solid deodorants in our ziplock bags, and have never had a problem. We only travel with carryons.

I have never even been asked and it I was I would ask for a supervisor. A solid is not a liquid and If BWI is so poorly trained you should point that out to the management team

That is fine if you want to go the supervisor route or printing stuff out. To me, it is not worth the hassle of 'arguing' with them. I am not saying you are wrong for doing that if that is what YOU want to do it but to ME, it is not worth my time to 'fight' over what 'I think is an insignificant issue'. That's my opinion. Not saying you are wrong and I am right, but you can choose your battles and I'll choose mine. And IMO this is such a blip on the radar screen of life, I'm not willing to make it a battle. :)

Thanks.. and that blog post was pretty funny.

I don't know anyone who uses a strait razor in this day and age,, makes me think of Sweeney Todd, the Barber of Fleet St! Yikes!! LOL!

I think of that too, because I took a Musical Theater Theory class in college and we had to dissect (ew?) that musical for a month.

FWIW I have never put deodorant in my 311 bag and I've never had a problem with that. Non-ipod MP3 players yes, but that, no. :)

And there is a problem with the Airport Security Screeners. Places like BWI make up rules that aren't supported by what the agency publishes. Just another indicator of poor training and ineffective supervision.

So… you might be wondering what types of deodorant have to go in the baggies, and what types don’t.

Stick deodorant is fine in any size. Well, almost any size… Powders and crystals are good to go as well.
Spray, Gel, Liquid, Cream, Pastes, and Roll-On deodorants need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and placed in a clear quart-sized baggie.

That's great for you, but liquid and gel deodorant goes in the 311 bag. Solid no, but why not just put it in anyway and avoid any potential problems with any TSA agent who wants to argue?

I have TSA Pre✔️, so I usually get to avoid all of this hassle.

Yep. Just give in to the ill trained and incompetent. It's really a sad commentary.

Thanks everyone.

I did check the TSA website, but I didn't know how all of this worked in practice.

:sad2:

All TSA employees are not incompetent; most are fine. Personally, I'd rather speed through checkpoints without making a scene or arguing, but to each his own.

And where did I say that all, or even most, or anything quantitative about the ill trained and/or incompetent Airport Security Screeners.

I prefer to speed through a checkpoint too, but not by capitulating to the whims of the ill trained or incompetent when I am following the rules and they aren't.

I'm with you. To me, my deodorant needing to go into a baggie or not is not a hill to die on. I pack everything travel sized anyway. More room for sweatshirts and mouse ears that way.:earsgirl:

If someone else wants to fight about it, knock yourselves out. I just hope I'm not the poor schmo stuck behind you trying to clear security.
