Question regarding Facebook

I'm not the most computer literate person around.

I monitor my DD's cell phone and FB account. One of the rules is no texting after 10pm. I see in her FB Messages that she posted at 2:48am. One, could that time stamp be wrong and two, is there always a "Phone icon" when the message is via phone and not computer?

TIA to my wise dis friends.

I've found that the times posted on FB are not always correct. I've made comments to people about the time of their post and they're like "huh?".

Yep, I've had FB mix up times before as well. I don't post from my phone so I'm not sure about the icon.

I, too, have seen the times be off on FB.

If someone is posting from their phone the emblem will show up on their post.

I've seen the times messed up also.

When I post from my iTouch it always shows up with the phone icon.

Personally, I'd let it go...FB messes up a lot and posts appear and disappear and it can be like the Twilight Zone sometimes.
I do think monitering is a good idea though. :)

Can you set up parental controls tht prohibit her from going on the computer outside of your chosen hours? It may be that this is a mistake but, then again, my DS12 has a friend who brags about the porn he watches late at night and my DD11 has a friend who brags that she doesn't have to follow any of her parents rules, all she has to do is wait for them to fall asleep and sneak down to the computer. I'm not saying your DD is doing this, just that some do. The only way to be sure is to set up password controlled accounts with limitations.

If there is a tiny cell phone under her status it means that she sent a text message to facebook to update her status instead of getting on a computer. However, as others have said, sometimes facebook is off on its time stamp (much like the disboards)

However, I think it might be a good idea to remind her to not be texting after that certain time. Just in case.

The phone icon will show if it is posted from a phone. Sometimes the time stamp isn't exact, but I've never had it be super off--like several hours.

Have dd give you her phone when it is bedtime and you return it in the monring. She doesn't need her phone in the middle of the night and that will cut down on the temptation to check texts and post on fb.

I've never NOT had the phone icon when posting from a mobile device. I think that one is pretty consistent.

Now times? Mine are always wonky. I've had them off by several hours many times. My cousin keeps sending me messages at 4am & I promise that she isn't up at that time.

I don't know about other cell phone carriers, but if you have Verizon, you can log onto myverizon.com, click on her phone number in the account and view her usuage. It shows every phone call and data usage, including the time sent or when the phone call was made/received. There's no charge for this.

I've never seen on mine or DH's phone status thing to be wrong. Our times aren't that far off either.

There are sometimes delays. I've had a 12 hour delay from when I sent the text until when the status appeared on my page.

I've posted something on Facebook particularly from my phone only to have it show up many hours different than when it was posted. I never post between 1 AM and 5 AM because heck, I'm not sure those hours really exist any more as I am sleeping. However, I'll get a post from a friend that says; "You were sure up late."

One explanation would be crappy cell phone signal. Sometimes when you type a message on the cell phone it doesn't go right away. Phone runs out of battery, goes out of service (my living room is out of service), network is busy... Then whenever it wants to it just sends the message. Hence, wrong timestamp.

do you have parental controls on your cell phone account?

If so, you can block her phone from working after 10pm.

We have T-Mobile and I love my parental controls.

My friend was just complaining yesterday about FB. She said that every time she changes it back to EST, FB changes back to GMT. That's a 5 hour difference.

To her, that makes a difference. To me, not so much.

I would not trust FB for time stamps. The other day, I was on FB and I got a little pop up message that told me my DD responded to my wall post 3 seconds ago.

DD was on her way to Maine with her friend's family at that moment, so there is no way she could have responded 3 seconds ago. She may have typed something before she left a few hours before, and FB was just getting around to actually posting it.

Thanks for all the information.

Once I sat and thought about it, I realized that there was really no way for her to be on FB at 2am. She is required to put the phone in the charger in the kitchen, and I know this kid never wakes up in the middle of the night. She's really a "dead to the world" sleeper.

We do have controls on the computer where she cannot get on the internet after 10pm or before 6am.

I just "spot check" her on FB and also her texting. When she got her FB account and phone, I wrote out a list of rules and had her sign them so there was no misunderstanding. Other than breaking a rule within the first week and losing phone and computer for 7 days, she's been pretty good.

Again, thanks for all info and advice.
