Question re: using SW credit

I have a question about the expiration date when using credit on SW. If I book by the expiration date, can I fly after the expiration date? Or do I have to fly by the expiration date?

You have to fly by the expiration date. You may be able, instead, to extend the length of your credit for a fee, but not until really close to the date it expires.

From SWA's website:

100% of the ticket value may be applied to future travel to be completed for up to 12 months or by your ticket's expiration date, whichever comes first.

Looks like your travel must be completed by that date.

We have a credit for our flights we took a week ago and it says it has to be booked and used by October 24th.
