Question re cancelling vs rebooking reservation

Hi, all. I thought I understood the ins and outs of using my membership but this is a new scenario for me.

Got GOTG preview passes and waitlisted a room. Decided not to go as flights from west coast crazy high-went to cancel wait list and it had filled. So now I have a room that I don’t want to use with less than 30 days out (that’ll learn me).

Can I rebook that room to later dates? I’d do that with the intent of using it-have have universal APs we want to use once more before they expire? If I do, can I cancel if needed or are those points now permanently in holding?

You can cancel and the points will go into holding. Holding points can only be used to book a stay that is 60 days or less into the future. If you cancel your current reservation and re-book and then cancel again (more than 30 days in advance) it won't change the status of the points. They will remain "holding points".

Holding points expire at the end of your UY.

Thank you. So I can cancel or modify but points remain as holding.

I just tried to experiment with modifying and oddly it wouldn’t let me select Grand Californian (one of my contracts though fortunately didn’t use those points for this reservation)-anyone know why?

You can't modify a WDW DVC resort to Grand Californian or Aulani online. You have to call. Why, I don't know......

You can cancel online and then book something else, which is pretty much the same thing.
