After posting that my DF and I went under contract on a home we are buying and another we are selling some folks were amazed at how "cheap" they thought the housing was. To us its outrageous! Running at $100 a square foot and in brand new homes $110 per square foot.


This got me thinking.....what is it running in your area???

In my area, it is a little over $200 per square foot.

Here it's around $350 for waterfront and $230-250 for a view. That's totally remodeled, needing no upgrades.

New construction in our town is running about $230-$240 per square foot. Almost all the new construction is listing for well over $1 million. Nothing smaller than 4500 sq ft is being built.

So far this is amazing! In the 90's housing out here was only $85 a square foot. There has been quite a jump since then.


Hmmmmm....maybe this is why so many northerners are moving to our area. My folks live on lakefront property in a 3,000 square foot home. They paid $110 per sq ft and I thought they were getting robbed!

Sajetto, where do you live? I might want to move there. Our 10 year old house could easily fetch $240-260 per square here!

If I did the math correctly our is $625 per sf. (we have a 1200 sq ft house and they are going for about $750,000). Needless to say we couldn't afford to buy our own house if we had to now! This is a 40 year old, ranch style home, 1 story. Nothing special. We live in Huntington Beach, Ca. Close enough to hear the DL fireworks at night. Makes me sick how out of control the prices have gotten!!

Wow! I bought a 1260 square foot home about 14 years ago when I was single and paid $74,000 for it. I think it would go for about $85,000 now.
We bought our 2000 sf home 8 years ago for $144,000. I would guess it would be about 165,000 now.
I can't imagine paying 750,000 for my old home. How does anyone afford these houses?

Our 1500 sqft house (not incl. basement) would go for around $500k here in CT in its current condition (32 years old and needs some cosmetic work). I guess that's $333/sqft. We're considered within commuting distance of Manhattan.

Don't know what it would be per sq foot as I'm not in the housing market but you can't touch a house for under $450k here, average price is around 600k

Yeah, where do you live? Sounds like you can "flip" your house for quite a profit to some of us who will still consider it a bargain!!

It's about $250-$270 per sq ft. here in town right now.

We sold a house in L.A. for about $320 per sq ft and bought here 4 years ago when it was less than $200.

I just did the math for the townhouse we have on the market and the new one we just closed on. Old = $190 sf; New = $195 sf. Single family homes around our area start at about $200 sf for something built in 1960 w/o many upgrades to about $350 sf for new mcmansion construction.

We have a 2000 square foot Cape, cute house but nothing speacial...considered a starter home really, although it looks like it will be my "finisher" home too! , that we could probaly sell for somewhere between $400K-$450K.

I live in the upstate NY (about and hour and a half from NYCity) the houses are going for about $400k. RIght now we have a bid on a house for $345k and its only 1700 sq ft and no basement. It's crazy!!!!!

We just sold our 962 sq.ft. 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo on Tuesday night for $715,000, but not sure how much per sq.ft., but I guess you can divide it up. We listed it last Friday for $725 and sold it in 5 days so it clearly wasn't overpriced at all, for this area that is (downtown Washington DC). It does have garage valet parking (free) which is a huge plus in this area, plus a very rare find. The building also has a 24 hour concierge and security, doormen, and porters.

I should add though that we also just bought a 1540 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 2 bath townhouse about a mile or so from where we live now for $745,000, but it's a totally different area, no parking at all and since there's no common entrance none of those doormen, concierges, etc. Plus the neighborhood, while it's okay, very residential and real houses are selling for over $1 million, is just a few blocks away from somewhat of a transitional area-not dangerous, just not very aesthetically pleasing or upscale like our current area.

Funny you ask b/c we do in fact "flip" houses for extra money. Anyway, we live in NC. However, the housing market is cooling right now so we're a little nervous. Also interest rates are going up. I'm thinking we may pull out of the resale biz for a while once we get two sold that we're sitting on right now. It is taking an unsual amount of time to sell them which really doesn't make our nerves feel any better.

we're in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia...

around here houses are averaging anywhere from $130-$200 per square foot. I'm basing that on the value of our 1200 sf house (just had it appraised) and what the new houses down the street are going for ($550k for about 3000 sf)

the market is DEFINITELY cooling down here, but the prices are still "up there" for us.

but, I know that this area (and probably yours too, sajetto) is considered the "new" Florida. LOTS AND LOTS of retirees are selling their places up north (NY and NJ area) and moving down here.

The average in my neighborhood is $108 a sq ft, I just got one of those realtor postcards. We sold our house in Memphis for $119 a sq ft.

However the house down the street just sold for $118 a sqft in about 2 weeks.
