Question on Airfare price dropping

I have read on these boards that if you buy a ticket and the price drops the airline may (if you ask) give you a voucher for the difference to be used on a later flight. Do you just take your best guess as to when to ask for the voucher once the price drops? How long do you wait?
I have considered asking for a voucher several times only to watch the price quickley go up again. And inside of 21 days out the prices usually only climb. Can anyone give any advice on how they handle this? Thanks.

Delta has always given us vouchers for every drop in the price prior to the flight. I check the fares frequently and call for a voucher each time the fare goes down. I had fare drop from $365 to $165 over the course of a few months and called every time I saw it go lower. Sometimes the drop was only a few dollars, other times, up to $100- it adds up!!

So if I understand you correctly you might wind up with many vouchers for the same flight if you add them up? For example if the flight dropped from $300 to $250 you would call and get a $50 voucher. If it dropped again from $250 to $225 you would call and get another $25 voucher? Thanks for posting an answer this has been an eye opener for me.

Yes, that's exactly how it worked for us with Delta. All of the credits are attached to our Skymiles Numbers and can each be used towards the purchase of future travel within a year of issue,ie, purchase must be made within year, travel can be up to another year from purchase.

I really appreciate the information. I'll be making a call today to American Airlines. I can see over time how being vigilant and re-checking the prices could add up to the price of a ticket if you travel frequently enough.
