Question for those without dental coverage

I've worked full-time at the same job for about 10 years. We have pretty good medical insurance and we used to have dental coverage before our contract was re-negotiated 3 years ago. I can't afford out-of-pocket costs because I'm in a financial hole. I'm still paying for my faimly's medical bills from a few years ago. I make too much money to qualify for aid, so I've been trying to save any extra money I can so I can actually afford to go. Its not even close to cover what I'd need. I should have gone to the dentist a little over 2 years ago when I fell with a hard candy in my mouth. I broke one of my molars pretty badly. But since that was about the time my family passed away and right after I lost my coverage, I just couldn't afford it. Now the same area just started hurting. The tooth is throbbing and my jaw is swollen. It hurts so much its affecting my daily life. The ER here has a dental clinic, but I don't qualify. The closest dental school is a two hour drive away so even thats out. I can't imagine driving that far after what I assume is going to be an involved procedure. And I don't even have anyone to drive me. Its just me and my 2 nieces now. So, Is there anyone out there in a similar situation? How/where can I get treated? I just wish I could find a dentist that offered a reasonable payment plan.

Many of the dentists around here offer their patients the option of applying for a credit card called "Care Credit" - which covers dental procedures.. It's pretty easy to get - I don't think I have ever heard of anyone being turned down.. Perhaps you could call around and see if any of the dentists in your area offer this service..

When DD lost her dental coverage when she lost her job, she went that route and was able to get the work done before the application was even approved..

If all else fails - and you're in a terrible amount of pain - perhaps an ER could at least provide you with some medication until you can find a dentist..

Feel better..

You can also try to get an appointment at a Dental School. Most dentists will work with you on the bill so don't be afraid to ask.

Oh wow! I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I'm not a doctor or a dentist but I'm afraid that with pain and swelling, you might have an infection setting in. You really need to find some way to get it taken care of before it gets worse. I would suggest getting out the phone book and calling every dentist and dental clinic in your area. Explain the situation and ask them if they can work out a reasonable payment plan with you. When you go in, ask for an estimate before they do any work and ask what the monthly payments would be so you don't get any surprises later. I would think that with the way the economy is, most dentists are dealing with patients who have lost their insurance and now have to pay out-of-pocket.

Good luck! I hope you can get some care very soon!:)

I was just there. The dentist allowed me to pay half upfront. I am paying the other half in a month. The relief I have is worth what I have to give up this month.

Pls. get to the dentist. They do have a credit company that will work with you.
