Question for skate/dance/cheer moms

I think it's so odd that no hair pins are allowed in ice skating; when DD's played soccer, they couldn't have any metal clips in their hair. Yet, my gymnast daughter is REQUIRED to have a bun that takes load of hair pins. The girls are doing back extensions where they roll over on their heads, etc. They could certainly have a high speed fall if a vault goes bad. I wonder why the gynamstics world lets the girls wear metal clips and pins?

Where do you get this and the hair net things?

My dds hair are very long and I can't do a thing besides a regular braid and ponytails, I would love to learn other ways to do thier hair.

Any little thing on the ice is an extreme hazard. The blade makes contact with something other than ice and the skater goes down, hard. DD11 got a mild concussion a month ago and all she did was catch her toe pick and landed on her face. In synchro they are connected by some type of arm hold or skating in close proximity the majority of the time. It's not unusual to see one fall and take out the 3 skaters around them. Synchro teams that lose part of their costuming on the ice are deducted MAJOR points. (Or they are SUPPOSED to be ) We even sew the scrunchies into the girls' hair.

We ordered them in bulk from www.hairagami.com. I think that's the website. But some of the girls found them at Claire's. A local beauty supply place was willing to order them but at a higher cost than the website.
Hairnets can be found in any drugstore hair care aisle. At least they are around here.
The hairagamis are like to snap bracelets hooked together at one end. They snap whenever they feel like it and really are a PITA.

You can also find hair nets at a dollar store.

My girls hate hairigami...they say it pinches/pulls the hair at the base of their neck.

I use a lot of hair pins and bobby pins for DD. I also have to use a lot of hair spray. The biggest thing is twisting it (it can be braided too) while your winding it around band. I'm a hairdresser and have had my share of buns at home and work

Try one of these for a bun without pins......

I don't know if I can use it though. I have something like that (got it years ago) and could never figure how to make it look right. It was always uneven and lopsided.

My oldst hair is almost down to her knees and very thin. At least DD2s is a little thicker and seems to do better, hers is pash her tosh.

We use a brand called Bun Heads that can be purchased at a dance store. They are more durable than the drugstore nets, and they have a bit of stick to them so they really stay put. Also, I do not put pins in before the net. I do the pony (and use the thinnest elastic that will hold) then twist it into bun shape and wrap with the net, then take the remaining net and wrap it around and around the base of hte bun. For those NOT skating, hair pins are better than bobbies. Nothing else works for us. And BTW, my hair has been short for 30 years precisely bc I cannot do hair.
