We're taking the train from Toronto to Quebec City in the summer and on our return journey we have a 2 hour stop over in Montreal close to dinner time.

can anyone recommend a nice restaurant within walking distance of the train terminal

i'm wondering if there is a Jack Asters, Casey's or the like of near there.

I am not from Quebec, but I've used the downtown Montreal Via Station numerous times. There are many fast-service restaurants located in the train station itself (McDonald's, Tim Hortons, Subway, and Second Cup amongst others). There is a very nice gourmet bakery/deli, Premier Moisson, which serves quiche, pate, sandwiches, salads and desserts. There is at least one licensed table service restaurant, called DeliPlanet. You can also access the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel and its restaurants by following the directional signs in the Via Station. You do not have to go outside. The Via Station also serves a a main metro (subway) hub, so the pedestrian traffic can be quite heavy during rush hour and lunchtime. If you are at the station on a Sunday or on a holiday, some of the counter service restaurants and the bakery/deli will not be open.

If you go upstairs from the train station on Rene-Levesque Street, you will find the restaurant THE KEG. It can be a bit pricer but the food is excellent.
As far as I know, there are no Jack Astor's or Casey's in downtown Montreal.

Enjoy your stay here even if it is short!!!!

Edited to add - the resturant is across the street from the Queen Elizabeth Hotel (Central Station is below the Hotel).
