Question for ladies

If someone tells you that again, just laugh, smile and say "Oh no! I bet you say that to all the girls in empire blouses!" And go on your way. Don't even listen to the explanation or the apology. Just smile and keep going. ;)

It's worked for me.

Here's a conversation I had one day while wearing a polo shirt:

Her: "Are you pregnant?"
Me: "No!"
Her: [elevator eyes] "Seriously?!"
Me: [stunned] "Um, what?"

:scared1:

It's bad enough to ask, but then to question the answer?! If I had been pregnant and it was her business to know, I would have told her!

And the irony of it all is that she is probably twice my size. Following her logic, I should have asked her when her twins were due.

I'm a size 4 and in my 50's, and I get asked that question when I wear those kind of tops (they are comfortable, especially when it is really hot outside). I can't believe how cluelessly rude some people are!

I would wear it again but feel free to ignore my fashion advice as I dress for comfort.

:hug:I'm sure the top looks fine.

LoL. Yea, people are free to ignore my fashion advice too. I will dress cute or nice if the situation calls for it. However, normally I dress for comfort, especially in this heat. Heck, I just got back from the grocery and I wore Yoga pants and a Mickey tshirt.

I think every time I tried to wear it again I would think of this comment and feel self concious. I'd get rid of it.

It is not ok to ask that question!

I agree! It would always make me feel pg after that & I am not interested in appearing or being pg again! :rotfl:

Of course, it could just be one clueless guy & no one else thinks that. I would still not be able to enjoy the shirt after that.

I remember years ago when I first started working I wore a loose button up top to work. The older woman who was at the next desk looked at me and said "what does that mean?".

Now that was RUDE !! If someone (particularly a woman who should have better sense) took it that far I would be seriously ticked.

Unfortunately, I am not as skinny as Kate Middleton and am well endowed up top. I can see how the guy made that mistake. It's just embarrassing when that kind of thing happens.

that's a perk of getting old - I don't get asked that question any more!

I was wearing an empire waist shirt and was in the jewelry store with my then boyfriend (now dh). He was looking at engagement rings, but I was far away. I wanted him to pick out something without my influence. Anyway, the clerk came over and asked if I needed anything. I said, "Oh, no. I am with him," and pinted to BF. The clerk said, "Oh! I see you're expecting then!" I was paranoid about my shirt anyway and assumed he meant I looked pregnant! We had an awkward conversation until we figured it out. He kept apologizing and saying, "OMG, no! YOu are so thin!" I was really thin at the time, so I believed him!

One of my friends at work wore an empire type top and some of the kids in her class told her that they were excited that she was having a baby :scared1: She asked me at lunch if she really looked big in the shirt. She is tall and skinny, but I just think it's the style of the shirt that is not really flattering on most people. She never wore the shirt again. :rotfl2:

Rude people are going to be rude, no matter what you are wearing.

You described 90% of my wardrobe, and I've had those comments. I just let it roll off of my back. If I'm comfortable, I don't care what anyone else thinks.

Is smacking the person an option?

I like baby doll/empire waist shirts. But you have to shop carefully to avoid the maternity look.

I have one shirt that I used to love...I still have it as it is comfy. But I continued wearing it throughout my last pregnancy and now I can't look at it without thinking that it now looks like a maternity shirt. Since I like it, I kept it. But I don't wear it as much as I used to. I feel like I ruined it.

Don't people know that it is just something you don't ask? :headache:
