Question for experienced owners who rent

I am planning an Alaska cruise and was planning on just using my points. It just seems much more economical to rent my points and pay cash for the cruise. I have never considered renting points and therefore am a bit leary.

I think my main concern is, if my renters ruin something in the room, will I be responsible for it? How much responsibility will I have if renting out my space? If I use a service (which is most likely what I will do), will the service offer me some type of protection?

What are all the pros/cons regarding renting points?

Bumping, as this question was moved from the Rent/Trade board.

Just a suggestion.....try transferring points to another DVC owner and let them make the reservations on their account!! It is much easier than renting in my opinon (and you make some nice freinds that way as well!).

Good luck

I used David's service early this year to rent points so we could cruise this spring break. I've also rented out a few points myself in the past. I will never rent out my points myself again. I will always use David's service if I ever need to rent points again. It is and was a totally pleasurable experience Now, that being said, it does not answer the question of who is responsible for the damages? There is an agreement, but I believe Disney will hold you responsible and then you have to go after the renter. There are horror stories out there involving renters. However, I'm betting those problems are very, very few and far between. Whether you rent the points or a service rents them, I think your risk is still the same. I'm sure you will have people much more in the know, chime in very shortly. Good luck in whatever you decide, and enjoy the cruise!

I agree with this one. I avoid the hassle of having renters by transferring to a fellow DVC member instead.

Okay, so another question along those same lines. Does David have enough contracts where he can allow you to transfer in points to him? He would have to have more than one master contract to do that more than once a year though.

My understanding, though I've never rented point either privately or through David, is that David calls to check availability when someone is seeking a rental, then notifies members by email with the details to call MS and book the reservation for the client. I think he can also set up point transfers between two members.

He used to be added as an associate to members accounts to actually book the reservation.

I think I prefer the new method, as I would not have added anyone as an associate....just too much that could go wrong...and with my luck..;)

David does seem to have multiple accounts but will only transfer in 350 + points at a time according to his posts on rent trade board.

But David does help you if you have a smaller group of points that you want to rent. I need to rent a 250 pt contract, so he will help you to rent--you make the ressies, but he takes care of everything else. He rents the points for $13 and you get $10, 1/2 immediately when rented, and the other 1/2 at check-in, either by check or PayPal. He has excellent references, and clear contracts, which is easier than doing it yourself. I have done this on my own in past years, before the restrictions on the rent/trade board which severely depleted the renters using the board, and with David's service you can get around the rule of having to post on this site regularly for 6 months before you can post on the rent/trade board.:headache:

Thank you all for the feedback. I have decided to use the rent out service and I just hope it works out so I can pay for my cruise. If the buyer has a check in date that is later than my cruise $ due date, I guess I will be stuck going into debt for a bit.

Being that transferring points for cash is forbidden in the contract, I won't ever do that. Maybe someday I will be able to barter that way.
