We adopted a female beagle mix (14 mos. old) from a local shelter who was already spayed when we got her. She's been acting a little strange and I'm wondering if this is normal -- she will grab onto my oldest DD's leg and start humping (and she's a female). Of course, DD thinks she's hugging her leg and tries to encourage it while DH and I just stand there in disbelief. I thought spaying was supposed to cut down on "frisky" behavior, or are we just thinking dirty, is she, in fact, hugging DD's leg? HELP!!

When we first had our Golden Retriever spayed (she was a puppy), she did the same thing for awhile. I think it was more just puppy bad behavior than anything kinky.;)

As she got older, the behavior eventually stopped completely. Give her time, she'll probably outgrow it too. Good luck - and thanks for adopting another homeless pet.:D

Humping behavior in dogs is not always sexual in nature. Often a dog will put his/her paws on the back of another dog as a way to say "I'm the boss around here" - it's a dominance thing.

Is it clear to the dog that your daughter is above her in the family rank? Can your daughter get the dog to follow simple commands, such as sit or down? Have your daughter feed the dog if possible and have her work with the dog on commands and I'd bet the humping behavior will stop.

Good luck!

She's establishing dominance. It's nothing sexual. With some corrections, and with your DD showing her dominance she will stop eventually. I would try having your DD feed the dog to show she has a higher ranking in the pack

I have a 6 month old black lab and she did that, we got her spayed a couple of weeks ago and I thought it would stop. Nope, she still does it.
Usually only to me. Gee, thanks.

yeah my oldest dog still does it to me and only me(dont get any freaky ideas) hes just doing it for dominance,i hope.

The above posters hit the nail on the head. This is an act of dominance and nothing 'naughty' (What would a female be doing on top of another dog anyways? It doesn't work that way!!!!) It's important that you teach the dog early on that humans 'outrank' the animals in the household.

:wave2: princess:

Are you sure Bruno wasn't hugging me? (at least it wasn't what my second thought was)

Have to agree with all stated above it is a dominance factor. Put her in her place and she'll eventually stop.

Yes it is a dominance thing. My little guy, however, wants to dominate a stuffed moose.
