I am planning a motorcycle trip for DH and I up throught the New England states this coming fall. Probably around the second week of October.

What kind of temps can I expect this time of year? I know that there are a lot of variables, so just a general of what to expect on a "normal" year.

Also, any must see attractions/destinations. Our northern most point we will probably go is to Ben & Jerry's in Vermont. Yep, I love their ice cream!!!

Don't have a route down yet, waiting to see what areas we would like to cover.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmm, weather can really be a toss-up. You can have sunny and 70s or 80s, or you can have dreadful weather in the 30s & 40s. Probably shoot for mid-50s, and lots of layers. (being on the bike, you'll be used to it).

Ben and Jerry's is fun. If you hit it during a weekday, you can also take factory tours.

The roads could be quite crowded with Leaf Peepers, depending on when the colors turn, etc.

Rt 1 in Maine is a nice ride, and you can find lots of great seafood around those parts. As well, the outlet shopping in Kittery is good, and you have to stop at the LL Bean Flagship store, it's really pretty awesome.

I know that period well as my twins were born then.

Put it this way: I was in the hospital for 10 days having them. When I went in it was beautiful in the mid 70s and I was wearing shorts. When I came out it was below freezing in the low 30s and DH had to bring me warm clothes and a jacket to wear home.

For years we had trouble planning outdoor parties for them as the weather is simply unpredictable then. Right on the border between warm and cold. Halloweens around here are generally the same way: warm or freezing, you never know.

So yes, it can be anywhere from freezing to Indian Summer in the 70s. Dress warmly with layers that can be removed if temps are higher.

Thanks Debster and Pea-n-Me.

We have ridden in weather ranging from 37 degrees to around the high 90's. Quite prepared for anything!!! But if Mother Nature takes requests, may I suggest to her around 50-60 degrees:hippie:!

Any suggestions on places to visit? We are not picky, just enjoy new places to explore. Scenic places, historic places, etc.

I live in Mass....but my family and I always vacation in North Conway NH every year. We love it up there, its historical, scenic and fun. You can check out Kangamangis Highway, the Outlet Malls, Great Foliage that time of year.

Sharon, we're planning a motorcycle trip up through the northern states next year as well. We're planning on going up to Prince Edward Island. This will be a helpful thread for us too!

I will check these out. DH and I are leaf peepers! That's why we picked this time of the year. We have already done Skyline Drive and the upper part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and had a wonderful trip.

Hi fellow biker!!! I caught you mentioning that you where planning on going there on the 2011 vacation thread. Did you mention when you where going? Now that we are pulling a trailer, it is so much nicer traveling!!! Even DH who was initally against pulling one is very happy we have it. He got to take his boogie board down to Ocean City for Bike Week.

The White Mountains in NH would be a real beautiful place to ride. The scenery can be breath taking and there is tons of history. Some fun places to check out would be Bretton Woods http://www.brettonwoods.com/ Drive up Mt Washington http://mtwashingtonautoroad.com/ The road will take you to the Mt Washington observatory.http://www.mountwashington.org/

We go up there at least once a year and love it. You could drive through some beautiful country on your way over to Vermont and Ben and Jerry's.

Don't know if you plan on traveling through the southern Adirondacks where I'll be (not far from Lake Geroge), but the middle of October would "usually" be daytime temps of low 50's or so - and gorgeous fall foliage!! :thumbsup2

But - this past October - by the middle of the month - it was very, very cold.. Some days it didn't even get up into the 40's..

If you do decide to swing through that general area, send me a PM before you leave home and I'll tell you what the current and predicted conditions are..

Sounds like fun!! :goodvibes

Thanks C.Ann, I will keep you in mind. We are not just fair weather riders, but being in a motorcycle, the weather will definitely play a big part in whether we would go or not.
