I have looked for the answer to this question all over and have not found it, so I decided to post (excuse me if it has already been answered).

I am considering DVC, but I usually stay at the 3 monorail resorts. My question is: can a DVC member transfer their points from a DVC resort to a non-DVC resort. If so, what is the exchange rate? I enjoy staying at the monorail resorts, so would it be beneficial to someone like me to join the DVC? I am going to WDW in August, so I plan to look at some of the DVC resorts, but I know that regardless, I will still want to stay at some of the monorail resorts every once in a while in the future.

You can do it, but it won't be a good deal. Points are a lot higher for the non DVC and you'll pay a $95 exchange fee. However, if you sit tight, everyone expects the DVC Contemporary to be announced - it could be a rumor that never pans out - but that is seeming unlikely.

I agree with crisi, hang on for the big Contemporary announcement. If that comes to fruition it would make an excellent home resort for you. If you decide DVC type accomodations are not right for you and you need a deluxe resort instead then I would forgo membership, it's definitely not worth it to use the way you described.
