question about transferring points

We are planning our first trip to SSR for next January, and my inlaws are thinking of possibly coming with us. We are going for 6 nights and if they don't go we are planning on getting a 1 BR (141 pts). If they do go we will get a 2 BR (189 pts) and they will be responsible for the difference (48 pts). I don't want to get in the habit of borrowing points so that family can tag along, so I thought that maybe we could have points transferred from somebody selling on the other forum, is that a relatively easy thing to do? I've been seeing that the going rate is about 10$ a point, is that pretty accurate? What about use year? If I transferred from somebody from a different use year would we have any problems? I can't think of any possible problems with this scenario, is there anything I'm missing? Can you tell I'm new at this???

My thought is that once plans are finalized I would post something on the other forum asking to pay for 48 points transferred and see if I had any takers, if I didn't I guess I'd have to borrow from next years but I'd make it clear to MIL that this was the last time we could be doing that, maybe steer them towards a 25 or 50 point contract resale, I think they want to come with us every other year or so.

Sounds to me like you must have a minimum buy in contract. Your dilemma is exactly why we added onan extra 150 points to our original 230 point contract.

Oh yes, it is the minimum buy in contract. Honestly though, for our personal vacation needs it is sufficient at this point. It is only when my MIL/FIL want to come with us that we will have any problem. I don't want to add on to pay for their vacations, even if they are reimbursing me for the points, as I still have to pay the maintainance fees in addition to the initial add on price. Plus, they say now that they will come every other year, but we can't really bank on that, and I'm just not interested in renting out points so the additional ones don't go to waste. Sadly, we really don't have the option of taking another or a longer vacation since we have limited time with work and school conflicts. :)

Yes, when you know for sure what's going on, just post on the rent/trade board. Going rate is ~$10. The points are supposed to keep their own use year, so it woud be good to make sure those points will be valid for your travel dates. Howver, I believe there is a glitch in the computer system that will automatically change them to your resort and UY if a muanul override is not doe. (Wait ofr the experts' opinions before trying that, though). Hope it all works out for you!

The points are suppose to keep both their original use year, as well as original resort and UY month.

I'm currently working on a point tracking program and have hit the same problem DVC has. Points need to be assigned to a master contract and use year. If you own OKW in June, and someone transfers you their BWV February points, the computers have an issue since you don't own a Feb BWV contract. So they become reassigned to your OKW contract. The Use Year can become an issue as a 2005 Feb UY covers very different dates than an 2005 June UY.

MS can do manual over-rides to use those points for their original resort at the 11-month point, etc.

I know they're working on the issue and I'm certain sometime in the future all transferred points will retain their original resort, UY month, and UY. But for now....anything can happen.

Thanks for all of the info! I suspected as much about the use year issue. I'll just have to be aware of that when I'm transferring points, hopefully I won't have any problems.

My plan now is to make reservations for a one bedroom once my points are available in August, then if they decide to come we will check availability for a two bedroom and see if we can work it out. So far they are not committing to anything so they will just have to play it by ear if they don't want to plan this. I love having them come with us, but honestly I'm kind of hoping they don't this trip, it would be nice to get away with just our little family and do what we want this trip.

Caskbill, you must hear this all of the time, but that is an awesome program you have developed!!! Great job. :earsboy:
