I'm a big 'ol 23 year old wuss afraid of heights and drops and anything that requires a lap or shoulder belt. (okay, that's being dramatic but you get my point ;) )

I just watched a little video on Soarin and it looks really fun and beautiful and amazing. But am I going to slip out of the seat? Nowhere did I see any type of lap belt, shoulder straps, or harness.

Can someone please describe the seat belt or whatever type device Soarin uses to prevent such wussy Dis'ers like myself from falling out?

Thanks much!
Sandy Bo Bandy :)

It is just a normal seatbelt. You won't fall out though. I have leaned over a little to look down, and I was fine... It's not scary either.

You can always wait in line, and when you get inside if it's something you don't think you can handle, you can exit!

If I recall correctly, Soaring has a lap belt. I think it also has a piece that comes up between the legs, like a three point belt for kids. There isn't really any time that I felt that I would have fallen out if I wasn't belted in, but it was nice to have the belt just to feel a little safer.

The lap belt is just like a lower seatbelt going from one side to the other (like Star Tours).

They have 5 planes and they vary in height. It's a virtual tour, so if you are afraid of heights, you may not want to ride. (I have a slight fear of heights).

My DM doesn't do heights all that good and did use the kiddies strap in the middle . We made sure ( asked CM ) to sit us in the back row ( Lowest) so she wouldn't be as high and could see the feet infront/over of her. We have been on it and the CA version at the top row so it was no big deal to get the back .

She did OK

I'm a 33-yr-old scaredy cat, but Soarin' is one of my favorite rides. Like others have said, there is a lap belt. It's a very smooth ride and kind of reminds me of swinging on a porch swing.

It is a lap belt and there is a loop that is in the middle that you can put the lap belt through if you feel like you might fall out. It is required for the kids that don't meet the height requirement.

This is a great ride...nothing like it anywhere else. If you can overcome your fear I highly recommend it. I went on it 3 times in June and never felt like I was in danger of falling out.

Hey, I really appreciate everyone's response. We only live once (although we go to Disney multiple times. lol) so I may as well give it a try.

Thanks again! :)

When we rode Soarin at DL, I was surprised at how mild it was - the warnings in the queue led me to believe it would induce motion sickness, etc. It's really a gentle ride, and I don't think the vehicle we were sitting in got more than a few feet of the ground.

It's much more mild than the video (if it's the commerical video I'm assuming you saw, where 5 people are on the seat and flying around) - you are in a row with, what, 10-15 other people? It is very gentle - when it start, the row of seats go up and you watch the film basically. I didn't think the row even swayed that much - if you get freaked out during it, just close your eyes. You don't want to miss it - it's a great show!

That's what I've been wanting to know. How high up are you really? I don't go to the third rung of a ladder. But I'll ride any roller coaster(did Son of the Beast last year). The speed negates the height.

I'm not much for heights, esp. when I'm not held in very well...with that said, I love Soarin'! As others have said, there is a loop thingy you can put your seat belt thru if it would make you feel more secure. I'm 40yo and I used it the first couple times I rode it...

My DS is afraid of most all rides he was scared to get on soarin but because it was new and he seen it on the travel channel he tried it even though he is 15 he used he child strap in the middle. Now he loves it and does not need the strap. HAVE A GREAT TIME:thumbsup2

I was planning on bringing my handicapped sister down for Christmas last year. So I went on opening day to see what soarin was all about. The ride is real easy I was in the first row so it picked us up about 10 ft. The ride was like Ellen's dino ride when you are flying in a helicopter. It was great. The ride IMHO was so tame I was going to let my sister ride it. Normally I don't let her ride something similar as that because she couldn't handle it but, I was going to take her on it and I would NEVER do that to her if I wasn't sure.

Have fun it is a blast.

yeah, there is 10 people in a row and 4 rows to each 'plane'. the whole ride seats 120 people at a time!

I have a HUGE fear of flying. Be glad you haven't sat next to me in a plane. I freak out. Anyway, I was really worried about his ride, but just HAD to do it! We ended up in the top most row of the middle plane, and the experience was amazing. I felt a few little drops and tilts but it was all part of the ride, and made it so much better.

It does have the lap belt but the seat itself is fairly shallow. My mother was terrified on this ride and she said it was because she felt as though she was going to fall out of the seat.

And, as I'm sure some people wonder, it does fit adults. The strap pulls out far enough to accomodate just about anyone.

I'm not afraid of heights, but I've got a long torso and shorter legs and I felt like I was "tipping" forward the whole time during my first ride. Was very uncomfortable (and I just didn't see how it was safe, LOL). Now I use the loop and I am much more comfortable.

You won't fall out.....it's like a normal seatbelt and there is a loop that you can put it through so ensure that you don't go anywhere....

Give Soarin' a try....it's one of my faves at Disney!

OK, I'm a BBW too. I am also VERY afraid of heights. That said, I was just down right determined to ride this! Here are a couple of tips.
First, before sitting down, I found the seatbelt, and where your fasten it. Then I pulled the belt out pretty darn far, then I sat down and kept the belt way extended as I fastened it. I am a large Pooh shape and was more than a little surprised that I figure even a person in the 400lb could fasten the belt.
Now I did feel a bit more anxious since my size put me more forward than other riders and I'm afraid of heights. Heck, I have panic attacks!! (But I was determined to ride!)
You really can predict when or if you need to close your eyes, which I did a few times. I loved this ride and went back a different day during my trip to ride it again. This was the only ride that I rode twice in the busy July season with LARGE crowds.
I was very proud of myself for riding this!
