Trying to decide if we want to do a porthole room rather than a verandah. How is the glass? Is there any distortion?

We usually get a veranda but we've had porthole rooms twice (the large single porthole, not the two smaller ones). Didn't notice any distortion so much as sea spray residue (think water spots) on the outside glass so that you often don't get a clear image. Its OK if you're just looking, but can be a problem if you're taking a photograph. Wouldn't stop me from staying in one again.

We lived in a midship large porthole room for 15 days and we loved it. I liked being lower to the water. The windows were thick, but no distortion. Think high rise in NYC glass. One afternoon we looked out and there were literally dolphins jumping right outside our windows. It was amazing. We have clear photos and videotape of it. By the end of the trip, there was definitely a salty coating on the windows, but that is to be expected.

Sorry for the smut I'm reading in this picture, but here is my view from the porthole. A bit of residue from the sea spray but otherwise a great view :)

Note.... not all portholes are the same....
  • Deck 1 offers the twins
  • Love the larger Deck 2 portholes. It's like a climate controlled balcony!
  • mid-ship portholes are larger than bow and aft portholes
  • would a bow port hole be cleaner than mid-ship and aft portholes from the sea spray?
  • mr power washer visits in the morning to give you a hosing
  • how high is the dock? Some docks at low tide means the public can look into your room.... keep your curtains closed!
  • some ship inside cabins have magic portholes

on the dream/fantasy, how do i find out which staterooms have the large portholes? i think the 8As have them, right? any other categories?

We had a bow facing porthole on our first Dream cruise. It was actually pretty disappointing, as we had to stoop to see out, and so never really used it. It's smaller than the standard deck 2+ Round porthole. I'd skip the forward facing ones. (On the other end of the stick, that cabinm was super quiet, as it was on the way to nowhere.)
