Question About Points

Thinking about buying DVC but I'm having a hard time deciding exactly how many points to buy. Assume that I have 160 points, but one year I need 165 points for my entire reservation. Is there a way to buy/rent points for that one year? Also, if my use year is March, does that mean my check in date has to fall between March of this year and April 30 of next year if I'm using this year's points? Thanks!

How many days do you go a year and how many in your family?
You can borrow from your next years allotment if you are short on what you have.You can also fin a member to transfer but getting just a few from someone is not easy.
If you think that 160 would do but every few years you might need 165 then I would just get like 162 or something like that then you can bank and borrow what you need.
If your use year is March then you would have to use the points by the last day of Feb or you can bank them but thay have to be banked by i think November or you would definetely have to use them or lose them.

Your Use Year just determines when the points become available. Since you can bank the previous year's points and borrow from the next year's points, you could essentially have 480 points to use one year (160 x 3). So for example, if you banked all of your 2007 points and borrowed all of your 2009 points you could have an extended vacation in 2008 or move up to larger accomodations. Use Year is really just a starting point for your banking deadline, it doesn't really affect when you can go or make reservations.

The Use Year doesn't restrict when you can go, only when your yearly points are "active". You can plan & reserve accomodations for trips into 2009 right now. With a March UY you would be getting your 2008 point allotments tomorrow. You can either use them or bank them into 2009. You can also make reservations at your home resort for vacations planned in the next 11 months, either using your 2008 points, banking your 2008 points for use in 2009 or using 2009 points for early 2009 vacations. You don't have to wait until March 2009 to make plans for 2009 trips, you are just restricted to the 11 month window right now.

Also, If you don't use or bank your current Use Year's points foward within 8 months after your UY starts you lose them.
