We are hoping to take DH's grandmother to MK. She can not walk long distance, so we want to rent a wheelchair for her. We will be driving and she doesn't have a handicap placecard, so we will be in the regular lot.

We are worried about getting her from the parking lot to MK without a wheelchair. Any suggestions?

Where are you staying?

If you are on-site I would recommend that for MK using the Disney buses. Otherwise I would let the CM's that are working in the parking lot and see if there is someway that they can allow you to park close to the Trams.

At MK, the handicapped parking would not really help you that much anyway because it is a fair distance to walk to the TTC and there are no trams.

Park in the regular lot, as peemag mentioned. Tell each of the CMs you encounter as you drive in that you have someone with a mobility need, that you don't have a handicapped parking permit and that you do not have a wheelchair. They do save some spots near the front of the rows for people in that situation. Parking in one of those spots, you will be only a short distance from the trams.

I totally agree with Sue. We went with our DS who uses a special needs stroller/wheelchair and I was shocked at how far the parking was from the TTC since there are no trams that run from that area. LOL, he did fine since we had his chair but was sure a long walk for me at the end of the day, LOL.

One point I forgot, once you get to the entrance to the TTC area, there is an area with some 'shuttle' wheelchairs that you can use to get from the tram drop off point to the park. Once you arrive in the park area, you turn the wheelchair back in and you can rent one.

Oh that's good! Where is this located (to the left or right)?

(bump)

My memory is telling me it is off to the right, but my memory isn't so good! I do seem to recall they weren't hard to find, and many times were actually kind of scattered. There are also benches so you can have Grandma sit down while someone gets one of these shuttle wheelchairs.

LOL
I was thinking it was to the left, so I think we can safely say it is to the left or the right!

The thing we can agree on is that they were not hard to find.

OT but perhaps you would want to look into getting her a handicap sticker. In Nc at least you just get a note from the dr. and take it to the DMV. They are like 10-15 dollars. While it might not help for the parks, it is so nice in general and will be a good-send on your way down stopping at resturants etc.

The handicap sticker has no legal standing in regards to handicap parking. If the above poster means a handicap placard or plate, well, it stinks that any state charges for it. To the best of my knowledge, most states require submitting an application that both the person and the doctor complete, then the individual DMV makes a determination.

Thanks for all the help. We took her yesterday and I thought I would update.

We spoke to the parking attendant and we told to go to out and follow the "blue line". We discovered that sent us to handicap lot. We were told we could park there, but it didn't have tram service. It was suggested we go back to the regular lot, which we did. We had to explain again that we wanted to park near the tram. So, you have to make it VERY clear, because not every CM is on the same page.

After arriving at the TTC, we rented the wheelchair (it is in the gift shop to the right). They do have complimentary wheelchairs, but they only go from the parking lot to the TTC (then you turn them in to rent one).

She had a fantastic time and wants to go again (the last time she was there was 30 years ago). As for the handicap tag, she did have one at one time, but doesn't like having one (she hates to admit that she may really need it).

Our daughter has autism and uses a special needs stroller. In our state handicapped placards are not issued to people with autism. While in Disney World we simply explain to the parking lot CM's that our daughter is using a wheelchair and they guide us to a parking space at the front of an aisle and we catch the tram from there. It is a BIG help!

In case the CM is not on the same page, it is easy to demonstrate how you can stop near the tram without blocking traffic. Simply follow the flow of cars a little ways down the aisle and do a small loop-de-loop coming around to commence the next aisle's worth of parking prematurely. Here everyone else can get out and then you can get back in and merge with the line of cars going down the aisle and park. Then you walk back to rejoin the rest of your family at the tram or at the ticket booth concourse.

Taking the tram, wheelchairs have to be folded. The handicapped area up front with no tram service is meant for folks who need to sit in the wheelchair or scooter all the time.

The first time I went with my scooter to MK I didn't have the placecard yet. When we drove into the parking lot we just stopped whenever a parking lot attendant tried to direct us to park and asked nicely if we could just drive up front to drop me and scooter off then the hubby would drive back and park. Each one said yes.

The second time we went with the scooter *and* the placecard we parked in the handicap parking which had no tram for the hubby.

When we go again we will try the regular lot and just ask to drop off again so the hubby doesn't have to walk all that way.
