Question about Mixology

Hi Everyone,

I'm sailing on the Magic and I'm trying to think of some adult activities to do while on the ship during sea days. I've seen things about Mixology classes. Couple questions:
  • From people who have done them before, are they fun? Is there a particular one that is better to do over another? Probably would only do one.
  • What exactly happens during the Mixology class? Do they tell you how to make the drink and then you drink it?
  • How much alcohol do you actually get to drink at these things?
  • Is it worth the cost?
  • Where would you sign up for this? I'm pretty sure it has to be done once boarding the ship I haven't seen anything online
Besides the Mixology classes is there other fun adult activities to do on the ship? It's going to be over Christmas so I'm sure there will be some holiday themed things to do? I'm looking mainly for adult couple activities.

This will be my first time on a Disney cruise.

Thanks! :)

I love them. There are various "tastings" but mixology itself is just one type of this. I prefer mixology as I get to try different things. There are also wine tastings, martinis (which is good if you like martinis), tequila one with margartias and others.

Ive had a few different types of ones. [/quote]
It depends on the type (and you can't find out in advance). I've had ones where you get 5 drinks to try and they show you how they are made but also ones where you make your cocktails yourselves and ones where a volunteer makes the cocktails so it depends on the people doing it.
How much alcohol do you actually get to drink at these things?
depending on the way you do it (see above) I would say you get around 2 full cocktails max.
Is it worth the cost?
I think so yes

It will say on the navigator when you get onboard where the sign up is but usually either the main restaurant or the nightclub once you get onboard

They do adult cookery classes on sea days along with things like adult animation. If you go to http://www.disneycruiselineblog.com then you can see previous navigators to get some ideas

We've done a few of the mixology classes and as the PP said...it depends onthe people and the bartender.

I've been to one where they provide everything a your place setting and everyone mixed their own drinks.

At another one they 4 people volunteer and they made 5 drinks each and served them to everyone else. This one was my fave as the bartender was fun and didn't limit those making the drinks on how much alcohol they poured. Everyone left feeling pretty good! lol

And at a third one the bartender just seemed really grumpy she warned that if you poured more then what asked you will not be allowed to continue making your drinks. She wanted every person to get up and make their own drink...three people at a time. Times 25 people and 5 drinks each this would have taken a really long time. Luckily Guest Services let me cancel and get my money back as with my disability getting up and going behind the bar 5 times wouldn't work for me.

These are definitely worth the $20-$30 depending on the class.

The chocolate and liquor pairing was another awesome class. I think it was $30. But one of the drinks we got to try was worth just that. They said that particular whiskey was $36 an oz at the bar or something extreme like that.

I have done a Merry Time Mixology (on a Christmas cruise ) and the cost was $30 and it was OK because when we got there most of our drinks have already been pre-mixed and poured. The cost was a bit higher than usual Mixology because it was the Christmas version and we had 5 full size drinks. We all made 1 drink at our table that time. All the drinks were festive looking. I didn't like the fact that it was all mostly done for you, but it was still fun.

Last month we also did Halloween themed mixology on the Fantasy and this one was $20. It was much better than the Merry time one, but I agree it probably has to do with the bartender and venue they are using. We made 3 full size drinks, 1 mini drink and one full size shot. Every drink was made by 4 different "volunteers" so pretty much everyone got to go behind the bar and try. It was fun and yes, our drinks were strong :)
Loved it and next time we take a cruise we hope to register for 2 mixology classes. We boarded the ship late (3 pm) last time and pretty much all spots were gone for ALL tastings by 4. We got the last 2 for the Halloween mixology. Regular mixology was full.

We've done Mixology twice and the drinks were very different both times. Both times we had the basics at our table and then you did some of the work yourself. For example, you had to do the muddling of whatever drink it was that we had but then they'd come around and add the alcohol after you'd done that. The drink sizes are reasonably substantial so it's totally worth the price not to mention a lot of fun.

We also did the chocolate and liquor one and I agree with ArgomANIA - it was awesome. I'd never though to pair some of the choices they had but they enhanced each other incredibly well.

We've also done: champagne, beer, tequila, wine, cognac, whiskey and martini tastings. All were great (some we've done twice and they're different each time). They're all a great value and it gives you a chance to try some new things that you might not normally try if you were just sitting in a bar. We discovered Moet & Chandon Ice Imperial champagne which is meant to be drunk over ice. I think I was trying to clear out their inventory the rest of that cruise. I now am a confirmed Irish whiskey drinker. We learned that good tequila is not the stuff we drank in university and have turned our friends onto the good stuff (which is great because he picks up a bottle every time he crosses the border to visit his mother so we're the beneficiary of that). I know what is good cognac and which is just a nice brandy - big difference. They're all priced between $20-30 or so. Typically you get 5 drinks and although they may be smaller than one you'd order at the bar, they're still all pretty decent sizes so for that price it's really worth it.

I also second the cooking demos as a great way to spend time. Also, trivia, some of the Disney-focused events (e.g., top 10 new animation techniques invented by Disney), live piano bar (Magic only) and other live music, movies - both in theatre and on deck, sometimes there are talks (we've had a talk by an Imagineer as well as history/culture talks about the ports on European cruises). Just check out the Navigator. I'm not entirely sure what we do all day when we're not in port, but it does seem to take all day somehow. We certainly never find ourselves bored.

Is one adult able to sign other adults up for the alcohol-involved tastings? I assume yes, if our reservations are linked and they can see that I'm only signing adults up... but maybe this is, like, the one time you need to show ID. And can I sign other adults in my group up for something I'm not doing myself, or only the ones I'm booking for myself? The plan is for me to handle this part when we're first on-board, but there are some things I have no interest in that others in my family will, if that makes sense.

I did mixology once and had a blast. It was on the Dream, and as it turned out to be a gorgeous day, almost everyone cancelled, so there were maybe 7 of us. Our bartender made one regular sized cocktail and then we made smaller ones of them. We also each made a shot. Because there were so few of us - and one guy was drinking his wife's as well because she was pregnant but wanted to participate as much as she could - our bartender took their tickets out of the bowl (with their permission as she couldn't drink and he was drinking double) and drew a ticket for each of the full-sized drinks she made. So for us it was a super good deal as we all got one full drink and one full shot and probably the equivalent of 2 drinks between the others.

I was able to sign a friend up in a different stateroom not linked to our reservation... They just wanted a name and stateroom #.

These responses are great! Very helpful! Our boarding time is 12:30pm, will there still be openings at that time? How close to the time of the class are you allowed to cancel without losing money?

You should have no problems booking it if you are boarding at 12:30, just go do it first. I think it said 24 hr cancellation on our ticket.

I didn't do mixology, but I did the cognac and Whiskey tastings. At Guest Services and at one of the bars (it varies by ship which bar) you can see the full list of tastings, times, and how many spaces are left. Some are in the afternoon, others are in the evenings. The two I did were in the evening, and only 4-6 people signed up. So in those cases, you could have signed up well into the trip and still gotten in. Others book up faster.

There are lots of "adult" activities. Some of the performers, magicians, comedians, jugglers, etc. will do adult only shows in one of night clubs in the evening. There are other games and events too. There was one game called "majority rules" where you split up into groups of 4 or so and then the host would ask questions, and your group would write down what you thought the "most popular" answer in the room would be. It was fun and rather surprising at times.

We did tequila and mixology on the Fantasy and we really enjoyed both! The tequila was very informative and you got to try several shots of tequila. At the end of class, the bartender mixed two cocktails and we each got probably 1/2 serving. I can't really drink tequila straight but it was fun, informative, and you would be feeling good at the end. Definitely worth the $20-30 cost.

The mixology was great! The bartender had 5 cocktails/shots to show us and called a group up to make them every time. This way, everyone got a turn to mix a drink and they were all pretty strong. We had so much fun. The kids wanted to ride the AquaDuck when we picked them up after mixology. It took a few minutes to get up those stairs. LOL!

If this was the Russian lady (and I use that term lightly) who sometimes works (or used to work) in Meridian, I reported her after our last experience. I've never encountered a bartender so hateful and rude as she was, and I'm a kid who grew up going to Texas icehouses and worked in questionable bars early in my youth.

Ooh that sounds fun! This is the first I'm hearing about the Merrytime Mixology. Are they on all sailings and what kind of drinks were there? Thanks.

Someone from our WBPC group set up private mixology classes for us. It was AMAZING. They had 5 premade mini drinks at our place when we arrived. Then each of us had an opportunity to make one full sized drink and keep it. There were 25 of us, and 5 drinks, and 5 got to mix at a time. Then at the end, he let us have the no-show drinks too. Everyone was wasted at the end...and he got some big tips too!!!

  • What exactly happens during the Mixology class? Do they tell you how to make the drink and then you drink it?
  • How much alcohol do you actually get to drink at these things?
  • Is it worth the cost?

We had a private Mixology set up on on our last Fantasy cruise. There were supposed to be 25 people there, but only 23 showed up.

When we arrived the bar was set up with glasses (full drink size)

The group was divided into 5 smaller groups and each small group would go behind the bar and make a drink (each person made enough for 5 people):

And then we tasted each of them as they were made. And let me tell you, 5 full drinks before lunch can be quite dizzying.

A good time was had by all. Definitely worth the cost.

Check the Navigator you get in the terminal at check in for location/time to sign up. Or see if your cruise meet group wants to set up their own session.

You have gotten a number of answers about mixologies and the other drinks classes. So I thought I would answer your question about the adult activities. Do check your navigator for the things going on in the evening after dinner. There are a lot of fun activities and shows that take place after about 930 at night. Match Your Mate, and some of the other game shows are usually quite a bit of fun. There maybe karaoke on the ship if you enjoy doing that. Some of the guest entertainers do adult shows, and those can be quite fun also. The adult club hosts tend to be very high energy people that make the evening events a lot of fun.

It was very pretty that's for sure! I will try to insert a couple of pictures. We had mostly margarita's, they were different kinds - mostly red and green :)
There was also a champagne and mulled raspberry type of drink in a flute and one that was some kind of cream liquor based and topped with whipped cream. All were full size (I think 5 of them) and cost was $30 for the merrytime mixology while "regular" mixology was $20.
As far as I know the merrytime mixology was offered on all the merry time cruises so in Nov/Dec.

I can't remember where she was from. But this was on the Fantasy. She worked the Skyline Lounge

Bartenders rotate between the different bars every couple of weeks. I've had the same bartenders in The Cove, The Tube, Skyline, Ooh La La and Meridian over the past few years. It may very well have been her. I haven't seen her on the past couple of cruise.
