Question about making T-shirts...

So, I was thinking of making a few t-shirts for my husband and I to wear in Disney World this September...

We don't really want to take a whole lot of our "nice" clothes, only to have them ruined, so I thought it would be kind of fun for me to buy cheap plain t's and create designs for them on the computer and iron them on.

Anyway, I was looking for fun fonts online and came across a dupe of the Disney font. Now, I don't necessarily have to use it, but thought it would be fun, but I don't want to cause a stink. Would this be something that they would be upset about?

I don't know a lot about copyright law when it comes to personal use and commercial use, so this is where I'm confused. I most definitely would not be trying to profit from their font.

So, do you think it would be a huge deal? Should I just stick to generic fonts?

I don't believe it's a big deal. Check out the DISigns board. People use WDW fonts all the time. The DISigns board is full of characters and rides, etc. This shouldn't be a problem unless you plan to mass produce and sell them.

I always make shirts. I have made them for a group as big as 21. It is so fun. You'll love it.

One time though, we found some lime green Disney shirts for $2. Already printed w/ a Mickey face! We got them for the entire group, except for one little guy. They didn't offer a toddler size. So I just bought him a plain lime green tshirt and started reverse engineering the design. I did REALLY well! It was barely noticeable. But we kept joking about how we were going to get arrested and the four year old was going to be stripped for put in jail.

In the middle of the trip, we were walking across the bridge in front of Splash Mt. and this officer came up to our group. I panicked! I about ran away! He was trying to get our attention. My brother had to talk to him, b/c I thought for sure he was busting our illegal tshirt. We was just coming up to my brother to show him that he was writing him a "ticket" for not smiling. It was so funny. It scared me to death.

Anyway, I'm sure it's fine, but you might be looking over your back the whole time near Splash Mt.! Let me know if you have any tshirt questions.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I actually used to work for a man who made t-shirts professionally, and over my years as his right hand (wo)man on the job, I started doing some design work for him, so I am fairly certain I can come up with some good ones! I love designing all sorts of things, from t-shirts, flyers, brochures, to invitations. It's been awhile since I've really had a project of this sort, so I'm really looking forward to it!

I will definitely let you know if I have any stories like that! Thanks again!

We make our Tshirts for our trip and no one is going to complain. They actually will probably compliment you on them.

The only time it becomes a legal issue is if you started selling the Tshirts without a liscense from Disney. Otherwise check out the DISign thread they do an awesome job:thumbsup2

Just curious about what you would be doing at Disney World that would ruin your "nice" clothes. We hardy even get dirty when we are there and have never damaged anything. A little sweat, maybe.

Sheila

P.S. I see you're from north Georgia. I'm sitting on a hotel balcony in Helen as I type. We come down every year for a hot air balloon race. Great flight this morning.

We're not sure how we could mess them up, because it's our first trip. I guess I'm worried about sweat, sunscreen residue, spilled drinks/food... I'm very unsure as to what to expect! :)

Helen is only about 45 minutes away from me, and is one of my most favorite places, so far - Disney's only 98 days away!

If you're a frequent visitor to Helen, I'm sure you know about Betty's Country Store. If you don't know about Betty's Country Store, look for it. In the back of the store they have the largest cookies ever! My personal favorite are the chocolate oatmeal no bake cookies. My husband and I split one everytime we go to Helen.

Why would your regular clothes get ruined? What exactly are you doing to them? :rotfl:

Thanks for the tip. We've been to Betty's many times.
