Question about making 2 reservations - same night, same restaurant, 2 different times

Background: We're in HS on 12/9. It is EMH that night so I am hoping (looking at what has happened in previous years) that they will schedule a second Fantasmic for that night at around 8pm. Currently I have planned to see F! at 6.30pm and eat at Hollywood Brown Derby at 7.50pm. However, if they do release an 8pm show, I would like to change my ADR to 6pm. But, we won't know til around Oct/Nov and I am worried there will not be an ADR for my time.

So, will Dining let me make two bookings and then, when I know for sure cancel the one I don't want? Also, am I crossing any 'etiquette' barriers by doing this? Don't want to make a social boo-boo.

TIA.

They do not allow double booking (which is what you are trying to do). This is also considered a hot issue on these boards. Unless your actual party is splitting up, then it is considered bad form to attempt to book multiple reservations for the same meal "just in case".

The reservation system will not let you do this. I simply wanted an earlier time than the one we originally booked. When I found this time, it gave me the option to cancel the later time or keep it instead of the older. You cannot do both. Keep your eyes open. If they open up a later show, book it then and cancel the first.

The system will not let you hold two reservations within a couple hours of each other. They ask that you call if you want to spllit your party; otherwise, they don't want you holding concurrent reservations.

Thanks for all your answer guys- very helpful.

And thank you for this LilyWDW - my main concern was whether it was a 'flame suit needed' topic because if so then a) I don't want to anger anyone and b) it is obviously a social boo-boo.

I shall keep my original plan then check back regular to see if a second show has been added :)
