The rule is "You cant eat Meat on Fridays during Lent", it says nothing about you must`eat Fish. Pizza is a HUGE seller on Fridays during lent!!!!![]()
It use to be you couldn't eat Meat on Fridays every week. That was changed to just Lent in the 60's sometime. I was told that meat use to be considered a delicousy. So therefore you couldnt eat it on Friday, therefore that is your penance. Also, I never heard of fasting on any day in the Catholic religon(12 year parochial school here). Nor have I ever fasted. Way back in the olden days (this was changed in the 60's too) One couldnt eat after midnight on Saturday until you had to recieved communion on Sunday. Communion had to be taken on a empty stomach. This is no longer the case.
In my house growing up, Pizza or Pancakes or Tuna or Grilled cheese or spaghetti were the Friday night servings....Still is!
I remember when the rule changed, I was a kid and we were at my Great Grandmother's house for dinner one Friday (not during Lent). She had made fish and mac and cheese and my cousin said-"you know Babche, we can eat meat on fridays too now. The Pope said so". So Babche turns to her and says (imagine a STRONG Polish accent), "You and Pope, you eat meat on Friday and make sin! We eat NO meat on Friday and NO sin!" It was so funny! (I don't know if I'm spelling Babche right, it's the Polish word for Grandmother)
I still don't eat meat on Fridays, the fact that I have to plan more carefully is a reminder for me. I still give up candy during Lent,I give up an hour of TV every day and I go to Stations of the Cross on Fridays. It hasn't hurt me so far to make a little sacrifice in my life.
